Michael Andrew Copeland, 47, passed away suddenly September 9, 2014, at the home of his parents, Maurice and Carolee Copeland in Mission, Kan. The cause of death was attributed to coronary heart disease. Mike was born June 7, 1967, and his early life was filled with sports, good friends and good times. His infectious smile and caring personality made all who knew him feel better. He was an excellent athlete and swam competitively for Shawnee Mission East High School where he graduated in 1985. Mike then went on to the University of Kansas where he earned double degrees in Political Science and Personnel Administration. At KU, Mike was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Always a leader, Mike served as president of his pledge class and was an active participant in campus activities. Following graduation in 1989, Mike joined Koch Industries, followed by a successful career in healthcare with Medtronics in Florida. There he met his future spouse, Lesley Rogers. Married in 1996, Mike and Lesley had three wonderful children, Tanner Michael (age 16), Riley Ann (age 12) and Chandler Reese (age10). Mike's life was centered on his children. He was a caring and affectionate father whose love was unconditional and inspiring. While his life was far too short, Mike was an inspiration to many who knew him. From his earliest days Mike's sincere and open personality, hard work and desire to make life better served as a beacon for excellence. While he will be missed by many, he will be remembered as a good son, a loving father and a model person. Mike is survived by his three children, his parents, his brother, Dierk Copeland of Ballwin, Mo., and his sister, Libby Bailey and her husband Todd of Stillwater, Minn.; and two nieces, Abby Copeland and Olivia Bailey. Mike will also be remembered by scores of friends from throughout his life. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Old Mission United Methodist Church in Fairway, Kan.
