LORENE NICHOLS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 19, 2010.
Lorene B. Nichols, 94, passed peacefully to the Lord on January 15, 2010. She was born on Feb. 20, 1915, in Bevier, Mo., the second child of Homer E. and Martha May Burton. She married Gayle Maxey in Madison, Mo., in 1930, and he preceded her in death in 1967. In 1942, they moved to Kansas City where she worked at a factory for the war effort until the war ended. From 1947 until she retired in 1986, "Maxey," as she was known, proudly helped notable Kansas City women dress in style at Harzfeld's on Petticoat Lane, and then at Bonwit Teller on the Plaza. In 1968, Lorene married Chas W. (Chuck) Nichols, and they had a great life together until he passed away in February 1977. After her retirement, she enjoyed many years of companionship and travel with Wesley Brient, until his move to California due to ill health. He passed away in 2001. Lorene moved to the Forum at Overland Park in 1996. She enjoyed an active life there until her recent illness. She leaves many good friends at the Forum. "NeNe," as she was referred to by loving family, is survived by her sister, E. Doris Scherder; brother, Charles D. Burton (and wife Wilma); sister-in-law, Marie Burton; Chuck's family which includes his son, Randy Nichols (and wife Dixie); daughter, Janet Harrigan; and grandchildren, Amy and Eryka Dean. She is also survived by nephews and nieces, including Jan Shrewsbury and Elaine Scherder; and many great and great-great nephews and nieces. Her brothers, Orville L. Burton and E. Burdette Burton preceded her in death. This vibrant, energetic, and loving woman, who touched many lives, will be dearly missed. The family will have a private celebration of her life on Feb. 20, which would have been her 95th birthday. Memorials may be made to Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, KS 66208. Arr.: D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel (913) 451-1860.

Hello ! SO sorry to hear about "Maxey." My grandmother, Clare Taylor "Ms. Taylor" (d. 1990), worked with her at Harzfeld's and we enjoyed her company, socially, for many, many years. What a wonderful kick she was. Your obit was MUCH better written than most...and all true. Weren't we lucky to have known her?

Those we hold most dear never truly leave us. They live on in the kindness they showed, the comfort they shared and the love they brought into our lives.

To Those I Love and Those Who Love Me

When I am gone, release me, let me go.
I have so many things to see and do.
You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears,
Be happy that we had the years.
I gave you my love, you can only guess,
How much you gave to me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you have shown,
But now it’s time I traveled alone.
So grieve a while for me if grieve you must,
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It’s only for a while that we must part,
So bless the memories within your heart.
I won’t be far away, for life goes on,
So if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can’t see or touch me, I’ll be near
And if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear
All of my love around you soft and clear.
And then, when you must come this way alone,
I’ll greet you with a smile and say, welcome home.

Not sure I'll be in town 2/20 ([email protected])
