RICHARD HARRIMAN Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 18, 2010.
September 10, 1932 - July 15, 2010 Richard L. Harriman, Kansas City's beloved performing arts impresario, died on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at Liberty Hospital at the age of 77. He lived in Liberty, MO. A public memorial service for Richard Harriman will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, August 8, in John Gano Memorial Chapel, on the William Jewell College campus in Liberty, MO. Contributions can be made to the Harriman- Jewell Series' Richard L. Harriman Fund for Excellence in the Arts. Please call the Series' development office at 816-415- 5025. Richard "Dick" Harriman was artistic director and founder of the Harriman-Jewell Series, an internationally acclaimed performing arts presenting organization, affiliated with William Jewell College. He joined the faculty in 1962 in the English department. In 1963, Harriman and fellow professor, D. Dean Dunham, Jr., petitioned the College's administration to fund performing arts presentations and Harriman became director of what began as the William Jewell College Fine Arts Program in 1965. The first season's two performances were a dance concert by New York City ballet stars Edward Villella and Patricia McBride and a recital by the world-famous tenor Jan Peerce. Iconic tenor Luciano Pavarotti famously sang his professional recital debut in 1973 for the College's Fine Arts Program and returned four times to sing at the campus and in downtown Kansas City venues. In 2000, the Fine Arts Program was renamed the "Harriman Arts Program of William Jewell College" in Richard Harriman's honor, later shortened to the "Harriman-Jewell Series" in 2006. Over the past 45 years, Harriman's namesake organization has become a treasured part of the cultural landscape of Kansas City and the entire region. The Harriman-Jewell Series has presented more than 850 events, and 19 American recital debuts by prominent artists. An Independence, MO, native and graduate of Northeast High School, Harriman was an A.B. graduate of William Jewell College in 1953, served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, and earned his M.A. from Stanford University in 1959. He was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow from 1957 to 1958. He has studied at the Shakespeare Institute, Stratford-upon- Avon (1960) and Oxford University (1963). In 1983, William Jewell presented him with an honorary doctor of letters, recognizing his contributions to the College through performing arts presentations as well as through his teaching excellence. Harriman has been listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and the Directory of American Scholars. He has held positions on the board of directors of the Kansas City Arts Council, Kansas City Lyric Opera, Kansas City Ballet, Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, and has served on the national board of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters. Among Harriman's many awards are the Missouri Arts Award for the Fine Arts Program from the State of Missouri (1986); the Pirouette Award by the Kansas City Ballet (1984); the Kansas City Tomorrow Alumni Association's "Performing Arts Contributor of the Year" award (1984); the Look North Award of Clay County (1985); and the county's Quality of Life Award for cultural amenities enhancement in 1983. The national honorary music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia gave its Orpheus Award to Harriman in 1985 in recognition of his distinguished contributions to music in America. Other honors include the Certificate of Merit from Sigma Alpha Iota, 1976; Order of Merit from Lambda Chi Alpha, 1984; Citation for Achievement from William Jewell College, 1997; and the distinction as one of "150 Most Influential Living Kansas Citians" by The Kansas City Star, 2000. Harriman also received the Community Service Award (2000) from the International Relations Council for his "contributions to the international field through education and exchange." In 2005, the State of Missouri named the section of H highway near William Jewell College the "Richard L. Harriman Highway" in Harriman's honor. Harriman was preceded in death by his father, Walter Harriman, and his mother, Mary Eloise Harriman, of Independence, MO, and is survived by his sister, Manetta Binney; niece, Barbara Green, and her husband, Max; niece, Elizabeth Calcara, and her husband, Carl; and nephews, Frank and Wally Binney.

I also have fond memories of Mr. Harriman as a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity at William Jewell. I can't remember many evenings when Mr. Harriman didn't have dinner with us at the old house just below the hill. He always had a smile and seemed to love life and his time spent with us. I lived in the house for three years and I never knew until tonight that Mr. Harriman was a fellow alumni of Northeast High School. I wish I had known that so many years ago when I attended Jewell. I would have loved to have shared stories with him and to have heard the stories that he could tell about a Northeast High School that must have been very different from the one that I attended in the early 1980's. He was a terrific man and I am glad to have known him.

I have very happy memories of Richard Harriman. Particularly when I did my French obscure opera recital in May of 1975 for 4 hours credit at WJC. I had worked so hard for this and I was very nervous of the presentation. But that all changed when a musician friend of mine who also was a student at WJC just came back stage and said, "Alice, Richard Harriman, Ginger Forbis and Mrs. Thomas Fields are sitting with your mother in the audience." I just said, "My god. I'd better get my act together. I have a recital to do."

And I sang. Harriman was my savior and fan. And he followed my operatic career from then on. I adored Richard Harriman. Alice Boyd WJC 1975

The arts presenting community will forever the amazing impact Richard had on our collective work. As a colleague in Plain's Presenters, he was for me a mentor, an advisor, a cheerleader, and a friend. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones.

I was fortunate enough to have gone to William Jewell. The four years worth of programs and ticket stubs that I still keep today are a virtual "who's who" of living fine artists. I was blessed to have been the recipient of a fine arts education as well as my normal course of study while at Jewell. The fine arts series is at the top of my list when people ask me about if and why I enjoyed my college experience. In prayer for his family, JRD

I have known Richard all my life; and knew his parents well via Mt. Washington Methodist church where my family and I also attended. He had an enormous number of close friends from that venue; pastor Phillips I think of for one and he has passed on as well. I also worked for Richard's father at the Cash Bargain location on Truman Road while I was in high school and his father was a wonderful person as well. We lived over on Harris, not far from where he lived and grew up, and I was a frequent visitor across the street at the Elliots; Joyce and I double-dated with Richard and I believe a Ms. Thrillkall around 1953 or 54 to a Lamda Chi dance in Liberty. I attended there two years, 1953-55; and he and he alone was responsible for my being accepted into the fraternity. I talked to Richard off and on over the years--once prompted by a visit to Liberty that coincided after hearing his name mentioned on Public Radio by no less than Marilyn Horne--as an impresario sui generis; a nicer more accommodating person than Richard never lived. I was both surprised and sadden by his seemingly sudden death--as he seemed to be young by today's standards. Obviously his impact on my life, other lives, the Jewell campus, and community at large was formidable and will be lasting. I am now working toward my PhD (in French having lived in France and abroad for a number of years)--something I would have liked to have talked to him about, but now sadly, he will not know that. I admired his erudition and was trying in some small way to try and "catch up." Not possible.

As a classmate of Richard's in high school I was very impressed with his abilities and I still remember him well. I have been greatly impressed with his contributions to the arts scene in Kansas City. He will certainly be missed by many.
