Alice Birk Granger, 96, formerly of Raytown, passed away on October 25, 2010, at John Knox Village Care Center in Lee's Summit, MO, where she had resided since 2005. A visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 29, at Blue Ridge Blvd. United Methodist Church, 5055 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, Missouri, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial at Brooking Cemetery in Raytown, Missouri. She was born in Wamego, Kansas, on August 26, 1914, to Philip and Bertha Ringel Birk, the youngest of eleven children. After graduation from high school, she worked as a beautician in Topeka and Washington D.C. She met her husband, Dorman Granger, in Topeka and they were married in 1939 in Washington. D.C. After World War II, they returned to Topeka, Kansas, and moved to Kansas City, Missouri, in 1952. She worked fourteen years for the Harzfeld's Store at Blue Ridge Mall, retiring in 1974. She was an active member of the Blue Ridge Boulevard United Methodist Church for many years, including the United Methodist Women, the Priscilla Circle, and the Wesley Fellowship Class. She was also a member of the Triple L and the Shepherd's Center, enjoying the activities they provided. She was a life member of the Wamego Historical Society and the Raytown Historical Society Museum, where she served as a volunteer. She also volunteered at the Della C. Lamb neighborhood house. She was a talented artist, including water colors, oil painting, and ceramics. She and Dorman loved to travel and she was proud to say she visited all 50 states. She also went on several cruises with her sister, Bertha. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dorman, in 1987, and all of her siblings. She is survived by daughter, Carolyn and husband Bob, Stilwell, Kansas; son, Bruce, and wife, Jackie, Ellijay, Georgia; grandsons and their spouses, Mike and Dawn Austin, Chris and Misty Austin, Shawn and Claudia Granger, and Aaron and Jennifer Granger; and great grandchildren, Haley, Emma, and Sophie Austin, and Audrey and Evan Granger. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Blue Ridge Boulevard United Methodist Church or to the John Knox Village Foundation VCC Fund (400 NW Murray Rd., Lee's Summit, MO 64081) for a gold leaf on their Tree of Life. I hope comment finds its way to Alice's loved ones. I bought a painting that I just love of a flag and Eagle dated 1976 by Alice Granger. I googled her name and found many Alice Grangers . I took a chance and read this obituary. I live in Kansas City and I see she loved to paint so I'm sure this is her. I just want to let you know one of her paintings brings pride to my childrens's room and it lives on.

I, too, am sorry to hear about Alice's death. I often drive by her last apartment before her move to John Knox and well remember visiting her there and taking her to Lee's Summit to Bob Evans to enjoy lunch together. She was one of the people I often visited while on the staff of Blue Ridge United Methodist Church -- one of the special ones! I so enjoyed her sense of humor. And I have, hanging on a wall in my home, an example of her caligraphy. She graciously printed my name on a Pilgrim's Certificate I received as a visiter to the Holy Land. I'm sorry I lost track of her after I retired in 2004. Hopefully, her last years were peaceful and your memories are funny, beautiful and comforting. God bless you. Martha Wallsmith

So sorry to hear about Alice's death. We lived in Raytown for about 30 years and attended Blue Ridge Methodist with them. I was in her circle and had been to their home many times. In 1979 we moved to Clinton, MO and left a lot of very special friends behind, Alice included. She was a special friend and we had a lot of good times together. Shelby and Darlene Woods
