MARY SPAKE Obituary

Mary Jo Spake, 87, of Independence, MO, passed away November 17, 2010. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Friday, November 19, 2010, at Floral Hills Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 12 p.m., Saturday, November 20, 2010, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to The March of Dimes. Mary was born March 19, 1923, to Grover and Celia McCollum. She graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1941. She taught Sunday school for over 20 years at Woods Chapel Church of God, where she was a lifelong member. She was married to Edward Spake for 40 years. Mary retired from Harzfelds department store in 1984. Mary loved making quilts and writing short stories. Four of her short stories were published in the Star Magazine, one of which was published in the "Best of Remember When" book. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, son, Lee O. Spake; 3 sisters and 2 brothers. Survivors include sons, Larry and his wife, Judi; Mark and Tim; grandchildren, David, Michael, Nicole, Katherine, Zachary, Joseph, and Matthew; and great granddaughter, Avery.
