Michael Charles Mertel, 45, of Lee's Summit, passed away February 12, 2014. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, at Langsford Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. Burial in Lee's Summit Historical Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Triumphant Church in Lee's Summit. Mr. Mertel was born July 9, 1968, in Buffalo, N.Y. Mike graduated from the University of New York with an Accounting degree on a ROTC Scholarship. He proudly served his country on three continents as a Captain in the U.S. Army, and served with United Nations Coalition in Somalia. He was a decorated combat veteran. He was active in his church, with a passion for serving Jesus. Mike was a Cub Scout leader, soccer and football coach, and involved in school activities. He was his daughter's biggest supporter in music and dance and was most excited about mentoring his oldest son. His greatest love was for his wife, Shawna, and children, Jordan, 18 years, Celeste, 12, and Michael Jr., 8 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Michael John Mertel. He is survived by his wife, Shawna, son, Jordan, daughter, Celeste, son, Michael Jr., his loving mother, Mary Mertel Gleason, and his beloved brother, Steve Mertel.
