Gerard J. DeVita, 64, of Lee's Summit, MO, passed away peace- fully on February 20, 2014, at KU Medical Center. Gerry was born on February 14, 1950 in Boston, MA, the first child of William and Rosalie (Gentile) DeVita. He graduated from Stoneham High School in 1968 and from Providence College in 1972. Gerry married the love of his life, Sigrid Winquist on May 21, 1977. Gerry was employed by The Rival Company for 20+ years and The Gerson Company for the past 10 years. Among Gerry's great- est joys were spending time with family, refereeing roller hockey and Upward basketball games, watching his granddaughters play soccer, tackling do-it-yourself projects around his house or for anyone else who needed help, and you could al- ways find him at the scorer's table and press box during Lee's Summit High School basketball and football games. Gerry was preceded in death by his parents, William and Rosalie (Gentile) DeVita. Gerry is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Sigrid DeVita, of the home; sons William DeVita of Kansas City, MO, and Scott DeVita of Merriam, KS; daughter Carrie Connatser and her husband Matt of Lee's Summit, MO; sister Rosemary DeVita of Arlington, MA; grandchildren Jessa and Janie Con- natser; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends in the New Eng- land area. Gerry faced many challenges dur- ing his illness – one of which was a second stem cell transplant from his loving sister Rosemary – with in- credible courage. He blessed many people with his fighting spirit and started an annual charity golf tour- nament to raise funds to fight Man- tle Cell Lymphoma. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the nurses and doctors in the ICU and the BMT at KU Medical Center for their faithful care of Gerry and his feisty person- ality. A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 23rd from 4-8 PM at the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 615 SE Todd George Parkway, Lee's Summit, MO. A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, February 24th at 10 AM at the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church with burial services to follow at the Lee's Summit His- torical Cemetery, 806 SE Third Street, Lee's Summit, MO. In lieu of flowers, the family requests dona- tions to be made in Gerry'smemory.
