1922 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
Hugh Yarnell Painter, 91, a resident of the Baptist Home in Chillicothe, and former longtime resident of Liberty, MO, passed away April 26, 2014, at the Baptist Home. Visitation will be 1 to 1:45 p.m. followed by his funeral service at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Second Baptist Church, 300 East Kansas St., Liberty. Burial will follow in Glenridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Baptist Home Benevolent Fund, 500 Baptist Home Lane, Chillicothe, MO 64601. Hugh was born Nov. 7, 1922, in Speed, MO, the fifth of seven children of Charles Lloyd and Sarah Virginia (Allee) Painter. He grew up in New Franklin, MO, where he graduated from high school. Following graduation, he served in the US Army during World War II in the European theater. Hugh was among the third wave of troops landing at Omaha Beach on D-Day. Hugh was united in marriage to Evelyn Harlan on June 16, 1945, in Moberly, MO. He worked many years in the retail and footwear industries, ending his career as National Sales Manager for H. H. Brown Shoe Company. He was an ordained deacon and active member of Second Baptist Church. He was a longtime volunteer for Liberty Hospital and served for many years as treasurer of Meals on Wheels in Liberty. Hugh served on the boards of directors of Baptist Memorial Hospital in Kansas City and the Missouri Baptist Children's Home. He was also a founding member of the men's coffee club that met for numerous years at Hy-Vee. Along with his parents, Hugh was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, and five siblings. Survivors include his children and their spouses, Maurice "Pete" and Marcia Painter, Linda and Alec Wilder, Michael Lloyd Painter, Nona Jean and Frank Pence; sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Ted Smith; sister-in-law, Louise Painter Bowles; nine grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, as well as other family members and friends.
