VIRGINIA PATRICE VOLK Obituary
Virginia Patrice Volk(age 55) passed away April 17, 2014 after a courageous 3 year battle with cancer. Born March 11, 1959 in Dayton, Ohio and known to her family as "Ginny Pat," she moved with them to Overland Park, KS at age 2 where she graduated from Shawnee Mission South HS in 1977. She graduated from the University of Kansas in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts in Personnel Administration and Communications. She later earned her Master of Aeronautical Science from Embry- Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, FL. Virginia joined the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 1982 and after training in Oklahoma City, was assigned to various control centers before transferring to headquarters in Washington, DC and residing in Arlington, VA. Before retiring in 2013, Virginia worked 32 years in numerous positions for the FAA, including 25 years as an Air Traffic Control Specialist, culminating in a position in System Operations Security where she was instrumental in advancing automation projects essential to the security of the nation's airspace. She also coordinated the agency's Combined Federal Campaign fund drives and produced the agency's annual talent shows for charity. Virginia was a charter member of Women in Aviation and served as President of the Capital Region Chapter. Recipient of numerous honors and awards within the FAA, she was named Professional of the Year (1993) and Manager of the Year (1998) by the Professional Women Controllers organization. She cherished promoting aviation education among children and helping pilots and many others in need of special assistance. She also enjoyed genealogy and showing visitors around Washington. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Herman ("Hank") & Constance ("Connie", nee Hackett). She is survived by siblings John & Kim (Jack & Peter) Volk, Dietrich & Laurie (Erika, Kurt & Kevin) Volk, Richard & Becky (Rob, Richard & John Dietrich ) Volk, Elizabeth Volk (Charlie, Mary & Hank Doolittle) and Eric & Becky (Sarah) Volk A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Friday, May 23rd at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 8311 W. 93rd St., Overland Park, KS with interment at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, 8321 Quivira Rd., Lenexa, KS immediately following Mass. The family will receive condolences at the church beginning at 10:00 AM. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to the Women in Aviation Virginia P. Volk Scholarship fund in care of Donna Wallace, Women in Aviation International, 3647 St. Rte. 503 S, West Alexandria, OH 45381.
