Obituary Condolences

Doris Bernhard, 104, of Prairie Village, KS passed away Sunday, June 15, 2014 at her home in Claridge Court. Graveside services will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery on Tuesday, June 17 at 12 noon. Doris was born in Neheim, Germany, the third of four sisters. A talented dressmaker, she became at age 20, the director of a fashion house workshop in Cologne, Germany. In 1938, she emigrated to Kansas City with her husband and son. With her husband, she founded Henry Bernhard & Co., 910 Broadway, Kansas City, Mo and remained an active partner for forty years. After that, she became a volunteer library assistant at Menorah Hospital. She was a member of The Temple, Congregation B'nai Jehudah, of the Missouri Repertory Theatre and of the Friends of Art at the Nelson- Atkins Museum. Her many friends will remember her fine home-made cookies and cakes and that she never forgot their birthdays or anniversaries. Doris was preceded in death by her husband of 60+ years, Henry Bernard; 3 sisters and a niece, Janet Lewin. She is survived by her son Jerry Bernhard and his partner Steven Slater of Cambridge, MA, her grand- nephew Joel Lewin and grand-niece Jodi Kleweno of Leawood, KS, cousins, Brita Horowitz and Eva Cummings of Shawnee Mission, KS, and by four nephews, Pablo and Rolf Sieger and Ricardo and Hernan Gehr.
