ANNA LEE (BARRETT) CHURCH Obituary
ANNA LEE BARRETT CHURCH Anna Lee Barrett Church, 92, of Kansas City, MO, passed away July 3, 2014, at home. Graveside services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, July 10, at Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia, MO. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City, Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri, or Crossroads Hospice Charitable Foundation. Anna Lee was born October 1, 1921, in Washington, MO to Thomas James and Frances May (Wilkinson) Barrett. She attended Central Methodist College for one year and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1943, where she met her future husband, Nelson Louis Church, Jr. After graduation she taught physical education at Carthage High School in Carthage, MO. On May 26, 1944, she and Nelson were married in Carthage and moved to Kansas City, MO. While she was raising a family, she worked as a substitute teacher and later taught health and physical education for 22 years in the Kansas City, MO School District, mostly at Southeast Junior High School and Nowlin Junior High School. She was dedicated to teaching and her students. She enjoyed physical activities, dancing, and especially golf, and was a founding member of the Ladies' League at Hodge Park. In 1999 at the age of 78 she shot a hole-in-one, every golfer's dream. She loved her Missouri Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals and seldom missed a game for either. Wherever she went, she made friends of all ages because of her optimistic and cheerful personality. On a chalkboard in her kitchen she had written the following, "Cherish yesterday. Dream of tomorrow. Live today." That is the way she lived her life. She will be missed by her family and all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, her son, Nelson Louis Church III, her sisters, Lucille Walter and Laura Mae Schwamb, and her brother, Thomas G. Barrett. She is survived by two daughters, Lucile and Laura Church, and son-in-law, Robert Zuvanich, all of Kansas City, brother-in-law Joseph B. Church (Virginia) of Paradise, CA, sister-in-law Barbara Church of Savannah, GA, 5 nieces and 2 nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews. D.W.
