Joan Elizabeth Landon Bruton Obituary
BRUTON Joan Elizabeth Landon Bruton, of Kansas City, died peacefully at home on Sunday, August 10, 2014. A celebration of Joan's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 13 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church with a reception immediately following in the church's Jewell Room. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Bennett L. Bruton Phi Kappa Psi Memorial Scholarship; University of Missouri, Development Office, 109 Reynolds Alumni Center, Columbia, MO 65211 (note the Bennett L. Bruton Phi Kappa Psi Memorial Fund) or to the Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care (www.kansascityhospice.org.) Joan was born in Kansas City to John and Ruth Landon on September 29, 1934. She attended high school at Southwest High School and college at Gulf Park College for Women and the University of Missouri - Columbia. Joan worked in mortgage lending at James B. Nutter and Company and the Metropolitan National Bank in Dallas, TX. She was 50-year plus member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, a Youth Friends volunteer at Border Star Elementary School, on the St. Andrews Episcopal Church Altar Guild, member of the Garden Guild, on the executive board for women's golf at St. Andrews Golf Course, a docent for the Topeka Zoo, precinct chair for the Republican Committee, and on the resident and hospitality committees at Santa Marta. Joan enjoyed golf, traveling, tennis, snow skiing, and loved life at her family's Minnesota lake house. She was passionate about her family, a talented gardener, avid reader, fierce card player, and natural athlete. Joan is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Laurie and Ron Clark of Overland Park, Julie Bowden of Denver and Barbie and Dick Blaylock of Dallas; grandchildren Megan Clark Fisher, Bennett Clark, Sara Blaylock, Jack Blaylock, Natalie Clark Schwartz, Becky Blaylock, Barbara Bowden and Bryan Blaylock; and great-grandson Nolan Fisher. Joan is preceded in death by her husband, Bennett Lee Bruton, her parents and her sisters Barbara Landon Wilson, Gloria Landon Hotchkiss and Ruth Anne Landon. The immediate family wishes to extend their gratitude to family and friends for the outpouring of love and support. Special thanks to Kansas City Hospice Care and Zack Group CNA's for helping the family care for Joan. Joan lived life with grace, elegance, and a delightful sense of humor. Her beautiful smile was infectious to those around her and she leaves memories of love and laughter with her family, cherished cousins and friends. While the family will miss her dearly, they celebrate her reunion with Ben and her forever home in heaven. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7). M
