CORINNE JANE (MCCORMACK) UNDERWOOD Obituary
CORINNE JANE (MCCORMACK) UNDERWOOD Corinne Jane (McCormack) Underwood, 87, of Kansas City, Mo., passed away Thursday, August 14, 2014, at the Port of Juneau, Alaska, while cruising the Inside Passage. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 8510 Wornall Road, Kansas City, with visitation beginning at 9 a.m. prior to Mass. Burial will follow in Mount Washington Cemetery, Independence, Mo. Corinne was born May 30, 1927, to Elliott Hartford McCormack and Inger Dorthea (Stapp) McCormack in Sioux City, Iowa. She attended grammar school and was graduated from high school in Elk Point, South Dakota. She finished a year's secretarial course at a business college in Chillicothe, Mo. She then enrolled in, and graduated from, Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. She met Stephen Alexander Underwood, Jr., a journalism student at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and they were married at St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 14, 1949. They were married for nearly 44 years until his death in March 1993. After rearing five children, Corinne returned to school at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, earned a Master's Degree in English, was graduated with honors, and taught college courses. She was a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. While at UMKC, she won the Storck award for fiction. Her poetry has been published in New Letters and other literary journals and anthologies. Her love of learning never waned as she always took continuing-education courses through local colleges and studied languages at La Causerie Francaise. Corinne enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, and tole painting. She loved flowers, books, etymology, movies, and especially her travels around the country and around the world. She visited six continents, over 60 countries, dozens of islands, and she never met a stranger. She tried to get to Antarctica, but the weather wouldn't cooperate. Since she was on the airport landing strip, waiting to get on a plane before the pilot said no, her family said that she could "count" all seven continents. She toured 49 of the 50 states but would not go to North Dakota, saying of the blizzards in her childhood home in South Dakota, "Why would I ever want to go to someplace called North Dakota?" She was a member of the Roman Catholic Church, the Red Bridge Library book club, and a former member of the Stephens College Dinner Club. Corinne leaves five children, Stephen Patrick Underwood of Mesa, Ariz., Katherine Patricia Underwood of Olathe, Kan., Gregory Lee Underwood and Douglas Alan Underwood, both of Walla Walla, Wash., and Christine Jane Underwood of the home; four grandchildren, two by Kathy, Karen Lynn (Wasko) Punswick and her husband Eric John Punswick of Olathe; and Brian Christopher Wasko and his wife Bridget Ann (Occhipinto) Wasko of Olathe; and two grandchildren by Pat, Sarah Elizabeth Underwood and Alexander Edward Underwood; five great- grandchildren, Anna Dorthea Punswick, Johnathan Alexander "Jack" Punswick, Grace Elizabeth Punswick, Luke Phillip Punswick, and Declan Anthony Wasko, all of Olathe; and eleven nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Carol Hartford McCormack. She will be greatly missed by all her loved ones. Condolences may be left online at www.mcgilleystatelinechapel.com.
