ERNESTINE ELEANOR SANDERS Obituary
ERNESTINE ELEANOR SANDERS Ernestine (Ernie) Eleanor Sanders, 94, of Westwood, died Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Visitation and a prayer service will begin at 9 a.m. followed by a memorial Mass at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at St. Agnes Church, 52nd and Mission Road. Inurnment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Ernestine was born July 17, 1920, in Kansas City, Mo., in the home of her parents Joseph and Pauline (Voss) Ernst. She worked for several companies, including the Edgerton Coop, Barnes Florist and Catholic Charities in KCK. She owned and operated one farm in Wellsville, Kan., and another in Edgerton, Kan. She volunteered in the Chaplain's Office at KU Medical Center with Fr. Jerry Spencer as a Eucharistic minister. Ernestine was a lifelong active member of St. Agnes Parish. She was an original member of St. Agnes and attended St. Agnes Grade School in the old red brick building on 47th Street long before the church on Mission Rd was built. She remembered all of the priests beginning with Father Dixon. She was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Altar Society Circle, Round Robin Bridge Club, Quilting Circle and Altar Society Funeral Lunches. Ernie and Mary Jo Podrebarac together wrote the book "First 75 Years" which documented the first 75 years of St. Agnes Parish. Ernie was also a long time member of the Westwood Women's Club. She was a lifelong die hard Democrat who volunteered and every year worked at the election polls. She is preceded in death by her husband, Claude R. Sanders, Jr. in 1971, son, Steve Sanders, daughter, Diane Sanders and sister, Pauline Carney. Ernestine is survived by two daughters, Annie Sanders of the home, Martha (Joe) Hass of PA, cousins, Florence and Rita Pilsl, daughter-in-law, Margaret Sanders; three grandchildren, Charles Hass and Jessica (Arpan) Sura, Captain Joseph (Allison) Sanders, two great grandchildren, Katie Sanders and Atlas Sura.
