Jack Devore Dunn

Jack Devore Dunn, 86, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Saturday, September 24, 2005 at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at The Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas. Friends may call on the family 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, 6901 Troost, Kansas City, Missouri. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The American Heart Association. Jack was born in Kansas City, Missouri on June 26, 1919. He graduated from City High School, Iowa City, Iowa and was enrolled in the University of Iowa College of Engineering prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1941. He married Katherine Lucille Reeds of Iowa City, Iowa on October 1, 1943. Jack served honorably in the Army Air Corps South Pacific Campaign during World War II. On June 4, 1943 Jack participated with his B-26 crew in the torpedo bombing of Japanese warships in the Battle of Midway. For his extraordinary heroism in this battle, Jack received the Distinguished Service Cross and Distinguished Flying Cross. Jack participated in many additional South Pacific air combat operations throughout the remainder of the war. Following World War II, Jack served in the Air Force Reserves and was recalled to serve in the Korean War, stationed at Carswell Air Force Base near Ft. Worth, Texas. Jack was a career employee of Trans World Airlines, based in Kansas City, Missouri where he served in numerous positions of aircraft maintenance, inspection and management. Following Jack's retirement from TWA in 1983, he was a member of the "Oldtimers", a volunteer group that guided tours at the TWA maintenance facilities located at Kansas City International Airport. He also actively participated in the "Save the Connie" organization, which restored a TWA Lockheed Super G Constellation aircraft, the 69th Bomber Squadron Reunion organization comprised of his fellow Army Air Corps veterans that served in the South Pacific and the B-26 Marauder Historical Society. Jack was preceded in death by his wife Katherine on January 26, 1997. Survivors include his daughter Martha Ann Dunn, Baltimore, Maryland, son John Robert Dunn, Houston, Texas and grandson Brian Christopher Dunn, Acworth, Georgia.
