1927 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Elden Keith Miller, 86, Olathe, Kan., passed away December 8, 2013, at home. Elden was born May 2, 1927, in Wilson, Kan. He attended Sunflower Country School, and graduated from Dorrance High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Army in 1945. After the service, he worked in the oil fields in Russell, Kan., he drove a Standard Oil Tanker, and then worked for Holt Oil Company. He also farmed and raised cattle. In 1964, the family moved to Olathe, where he was a night watchman at the Kansas School for the Deaf for 25 years, and then retired from KSD and Rose Construction after 26 years, in 1992. He enjoyed working, and continually found side jobs to keep busy throughout his life. His motto was, "I like to work, so therefore I work." In his "leisure" time, he started the girls' softball league in Olathe, and was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a member of Ducks Unlimited. He was a member of the American Legion, and loved helping on BINGO night. On Oct. 30-Nov. 1, his last big adventure was taking the Kansas Honor Flight to Washington, DC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton "Buster" and Mary Ellen Miller (Heard), and his brother Vernon Miller of Mesa, Ariz. Survivors include his wife, Joann; children, Janet Trotter, Jaylene Huyett (Dan), Russell Miller (Tamra), Joy Miller, and Kevin Miller (Shelly). He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends for a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home Olathe Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 21155 College Blvd., Olathe. Burial will be held at the Ridgeway Cemetery in Overbrook, Kan., in the afternoon.
