1937 - 2013 | Obituary Condolences
ROBERT "BOB" NESTEL Jr. Obituary
1937 - 2013 Robert (Bob) Nestel, Jr., 76, of Kansas City, Mo., peacefully left his family that was by his side to be with the Lord December 20, 2013. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 85th and Wornall Rd, Kansas City. The rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at Christ the King Catholic Church. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery. He was born to Ida Catherine (Weisman) Nestel and Robert Ernest Nestel Sr. on Aug. 13, 1937, in Kansas City. He was a graduate of Rockhurst High School in 1954 and a proud graduate from Rockhurst College in 1958. Bob had planned to be a professional baseball player, but due to injury he was unable to pursue baseball. He married Joanne B. Murray on Feb. 2, 1963, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Kansas City and was blessed with four children. Bob first worked selling auto and commercial glass for Harding and Ace Glass companies. During that time he had his first dealings with insurance through the Knights of Columbus. State Farm heard about his success and recruited him, beginning his career with State Farm on Jan. 1, 1972. He built a large and successful agency with State Farm. Bob's motto was to take good care of people and they will take care of you. This is evident by still having over 150 customers from his first year (1972) of selling State Farm insurance door-to-door. Bob would work one side of the street while his friend and fellow State Farm agent, Eckhard Preuss would work the other side. Bob was hard working and would not go home until he sold a policy. Insurance was the perfect career for Bob as he loved helping people and never met a stranger. He was an agent for 42 years, receiving many awards for outstanding production and service. He also founded the Irish Crystal Company (Overland Park, Kan.) in 1991 as a legacy for his family. Bob was a 3rd and 4th degree Knights of Columbus. He was long time member of Christ the King Catholic Church and found great comfort in his faith. He was a past president of the Ward Parkway Estates Homes Assn. He also served as a board member for the Gillis Center, Baptist Hospital and The Salvation Army. Past membership also includes Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, South Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, Landing Optimist Club and Lalmba Assn. out of Africa. Bob enjoyed selling Toostie Rolls for the Knights of Columbus and ringing the bell for The Salvation Army. He loved watching Fox News, Kansas City Royals and KU basketball and discussing the games with his friend, Richard Hayden. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Ida and Robert Nestel Sr. He is survived by wife of 50 years, Joanne Nestel, children, Mark (Vikki) Nestel, Mary Nestel, Michelle (Jeff) Helzer and Melissa (Chris) Rohach, grandchildren, Colin, Carrigan, Robert (Bo) and Katie. He is also survived by his sister, Sr. Mary Ann Nestel CSJ of St. Louis, Mo., and a cousin, Irmgard McClurg of Seattle, Wash. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Food Pantry, 8510 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64114, ., 6900 College Blvd. #250, Leawood, KS 66211 or Sisters of St. Joseph, 11901 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145.
