He and his wife, Kitty, opened an iconic diner called "Kitty's Cafe" on 31st at Cherry in the early 1950's. It was a local favorite and still has an avid following. In the 1980's they semi- retired and bought a motel in Paola, KS. It is impossible to know how many he helped and/or fed, from family to street people. Paul was known for his quick smile, easy laugh and ready handshake. He was always proud of his family. Paul was dedicated to the Scottish Rite and is a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was Past Master Heroine Masonic Lodge No. 104 which later became a part of Ivanhoe Lodge No. 446; Past Master, Council of Cryptic Mason of Missouri; member KYCH Red Cross of Constantine, Knight Masons, Kansas City Valley Scottish Rite; and was Past Venerable Master-Lodge of Perfection. He was Past Director of Degrees Lodge of Perfection, member of Ararat Shrine since 1966, and was Past Director of Ararat Guides Unit. He left this world a better place than he found it. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kitty C. Kawakami. He is survived by four brothers Hatchi, Toshi, Tom and Hodge Kawakami of Sacramento, CA; sons Alan P. Kawakami, DDS of Sierra Vista, AZ and Gerry K. Kawakami of Kansas City, MO; eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
