Obituary Condolences

Dr. Stanley Hellerstein, age 87, died March 7, 2014 at his home in Kansas City from complications of congestive heart failure. He will long be remembered for his many contri- butions to pediatric nephrology and Children's Mercy Hospital, including: President of the Medical Staff, Direc- tor of Medical Education, Chief of the Nephrology Section, and Chair- man of the Section of Nephrology of the American Academy of Pediat- rics. Dr. Hellerstein published more than 120 scientific articles and book chapters. He also wrote the book Urinary Tract Infections in Children. He founded the Children's Mercy Sickle Cell Clinic and was honored with the Kreamer Pediatric Research Excellence Award and the Ernest L. Glassock Chair in Pediatric Research. Dr. Hellerstein retired in 2009 after 49 years at Children's Mercy. Dr. Hellerstein was a devoted hus- band and beloved father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by Edith, his wife of 61 years, and nine older siblings. He is sur- vived by his children Joseph Heller- stein; Alice (Michael) Ra'anan; and Ann Hellerstein (Samuel Belkin) along with grandchildren Myra and Toba Hellerstein; Gabriella and Joshua Ra'anan; and Daniel, Mitchell, and Melanie Belkin.
