DOUGLAS GILMORE Obituary

Douglas Gilmore, 81, of Kansas City, MO, died March 3, 2016 in Bishop Spencer Place. A private cremation and interment of the ashes at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence, KS, is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Johnson County Library Foundation, http://www.jocolibraryfoundation.org/, or to the Benevolent Care Endowment Fund at Bishop Spencer Place. Douglas was born May 30, 1934 in Kansas City, MO, to John and Margaret (Strait) Gilmore, who have preceded him in death. He attended Border Star School and graduated from Southwest High School in the class of 1951. He graduated from Princeton University in 1955, and, after an honorable discharge for reasons of health from the United States Air Force, attended Harvard Law School, graduating in the class of 1959. Douglas worked in New York City for the law firm of Chamberlain and Willi, and, after returning to Kansas City in 1972, was employed at United Missouri Bank in the Trust Department. After retirement, he earned a Master of Arts in Library Science from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1988. A former chairman of the Cockefair Chair Advisory Committee at UMKC, he was also a devoted volunteer for the Johnson County Library until his health no longer permitted it. Douglas was known for his intellectual curiosity and great love of literature and film. He was also a member of the Kansas City Country Club. Douglas is preceded in death by his sister, Dana Gilmore Holliday. Douglas' survivors include his wife of 51 years, Mercer Preston Gilmore of Kansas City, his daughter, Anne Rasin of Roseboom, NY, and his son, John Gilmore of Kansas City.
