ST. CHARLES – John "Big John" VanDenBossche, 79, of St. Charles, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, surrounding by his loving family at Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva. He was born Oct. 17, 1932, in St. Charles, the son of Arthur and Marie (nee DeMeyer) VanDenBossche. He was united in marriage to Guinevere Carter on Nov. 23, 1957.
He was employed at Moline Malleable Foundry in St. Charles for more than 45 years. John and Guin enjoyed several winters in Tucson, Ariz., after retirement. He was an avid fisherman and had made several adventures into Canada with family and his fishing buddies. Big John was a generous man, known for his compassion and for his eagerness to lend a helping hand to those in need. Most of all, he will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather. He was especially proud of his grandson, David, and all of his accomplishments.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Guinevere; son, John VanDenBossche Jr. of St. Charles; daughter, Suzanne (Dave) Dorn of Cortland, Neb.; grandson, David Jason (Anne) Dorn of Firth, Neb.; great-grandson, Wyatt Dorn; great-granddaughter, Josie Dorn; and many other dear family members and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5, at Moss-Norris Funeral Home, 100 S. Third St. (three blocks west of the river and one block south of Route 64) in St. Charles.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 40W605 Route 38, Elburn, where he will lie in state from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service. The Rev. Phil Ressler will officiate. Interment will be private.
