Robert and Leona McDowell

GENEVA – Funeral services for Robert and Leona ""Lee"" McDowell, longtime residents of Geneva, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State St. (Route 38), Geneva, with a visitation starting at 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service.

Robert A.McDowell passed away Sept. 3, 2012, in Florida. He was 87 years old. Robert was born June 29, 1925, the son of James and Margaret McDowell of Elmwood Park.

Leona McDowell, 87, passed away Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Rosewood Care Center of St. Charles. She was born March 31, 1926, in Chicago, the daughter of Phillip and Lillian (Bobkowski) Mix.

Bob was a proud member of the 5th Marine Division and was among the first ashore at Iwo Jima, where he was awarded a Purple Heart. He was self-employed for many years as a carpenter and sider. Bob and Lee combined their families on Dec. 28, 1968, and resided in Geneva until 1996, when they moved to Sebring, Fla. Lee enjoyed crafting, decorating cakes and helping with her grandkids.

They are survived by their children, John (Ginger) Mullally of Galena, James (Catherine) Mullally of Elgin, Maureen (Steve) Engebretson of Westland, Mich., Patty (Clem) Martin of Batavia, Cheryl (Jeff) Ryan of Batavia, Robert (Susan) McDowell of St. Charles, Kathy Liedtke of Sandwich, Patrick (Beth) McDowell of Sheridan,and Michael (Karen) McDowell of Rhodes, Iowa; their grandchildren, Bridget Mullally, Kelly (Mike) DuBois, Shannon (John) Yaeger, Erin and Andrew Mullally, Steven Engebretson, Laura (Steve) Samkowiak, Jennifer (Chris) Campbell, Craig (Stephanie) Martin, Nolan Ryan, Megan McDowell, Sarah (Pat) Moran, Lisa McDowell, Denise McDowell, Shawn (Megan) McDowell, Eric McDowell and Shane McDowell; their 16 great-grandchildren; and many dear nieces, nephews, and friends.

Robert is survived by his siblings, Patricia Sheehan, Donna (Jim) Stasiak, Donald, Delores Cryer, Virginia, and Darlene Bigsby.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Ralph and Leroy.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Charlotte, Phillip, Patricia, Leonard and Dennis.
