ELBURN – Donald Eugene Hegland, 77, of Elburn, died Monday, July 21, 2014, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.
He was born Sept. 22, 1936, in DeKalb, the son of Stanley and Theresa (Kissel) Hegland, Don married Eleanor Newhall on Aug. 17, 1957, in DeKalb.
He graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1958, and received his master's degree in physics in 1962 at Iowa State University, in Ames, Iowa. He was employed by NASA Lewis Research Center in Cleveland for nine years, Penton Publishing in Cleveland for 14 years and was editor of Assembly Magazine for 24 years.
Don was an accomplished photographer, golfer, private pilot and certified flight instructor. He loved to fly and belonged to the Nasairs Flying Club. Don was a life member of the National Rifle Association and belonged to the Sycamore Sportsman's Club. Don had a special interest in law enforcement and was involved in a number of community activities. Don was surrounded by an abundance of his family and friends in the days leading to his passing.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, of 56 years; two children, Kathryn Leenhouts, M.D. and David (Erica) Hegland; two grandsons, Donald Leenhouts and Forrest Rosenberg; and one sister, the Rev. Carol (Tom Shaffer) Hegland.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 28, at First United Methodist Church, 321 Oak St., DeKalb. Don's visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at Butala Funeral Home and Crematory, 1405 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore.
