ST. CHARLES – John J. Forni Jr., age 89, of St. Charles, died Monday, June 16, 2014, at Pine View Care Center in St. Charles. He was born April 2, 1925, in Geneva, the eldest son of seven children born to John Joseph Sr. and Viola (nee Popp) Forni.
John grew up in Geneva and St. Charles. John's father died in November 1941 at the age of 39, and John had to help support the family.
John enlisted in the U.S. Navy in March 1944 and served in the Pacific and was discharged in March 1946.
On March 8, 1947, John married Dorothy (Hedstrom) Nelson. That same year, they moved to Geneva. Dorothy died Dec. 13, 1988.
On June 8, 1991, John married Donna (Schmidt) Malesh. After marriage, they moved to rural St. Charles.
John was always a hard worker. He had many jobs over the years, notable among them: State Street Motors in Geneva, the City of Geneva and Delnor Hospital. He retired in 1990 from ARA Services. For more than 25 years, he was a volunteer with the Geneva Fire Department.
He was active in the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. For many years he enjoyed playing Santa Claus and was very busy during the holiday season.
He enjoyed politics and for many years was actively involved with the Republican Party. He served on the board of the St. Charles Park District for 14 years, beginning in 1997 and retiring in 2011.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 23 years, Donna; his five step-children, Karen Heavlin of Plainfield, Ray Nelsen of Sycamore, Bruce Malesh of St. Charles, Edward (Kimberly) Malesh of Algonquin, and Brian (Roberta) Malesh of South Elgin; six step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lois Carlson of St. Charles, Barbara Johnsen of St. Charles and Viola Johnsen of Batavia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by a brother, Hugo; and his sisters, Louise and Eldora.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 22, at Moss-Norris Funeral Home, 100 S. Third St. (three blocks west of the river and one block south of Route 64) in St. Charles.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 23, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Geneva.
