J. Roger Nystrom Obituary
J. Roger Nystrom

J. Roger Nystrom, age 78, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, February 18, 2018.

He was born in 1939 in Lockport, Illinois to J. Otto Nystrom, an immigrant from Sweden, and his wife Helen Gustafson Nystrom. The family soon moved to Wheaton Illinois where Roger graduated from Wheaton Academy and Wheaton College. He became a teacher of fourth graders at Holmes School where he had once been a student himself- and later taught seventh grade math at Lombard Junior High. A life-long adult learner, Roger earned an MA from Northern Illinois University, then returned to audit virtually every course in history and political science offered at NIU, his version of "fun." At home, he enjoyed building and operating a full-basement model railroad that mirrored a section of Pennsylvania in the 1950's. He sang tenor in the choir of Immanuel Presbyterian Church (Warrenville), and volunteered for several years at a local homeless shelter.

Roger is survived by Carolyn, his wife of 56 years; their children, Lori(Michael) Steinberger of Monroe, New York, John Randall (Susan) Nystrom of Machesney Park IL and Craig (Anna) Nystrom of Northwood, North Dakota; along with 10 grandchildren - including the "adopted" family of Joel and Karen Scandrett in Pittsburgh.

Roger's and Carolyn's daughter, Sheri Nystrom Scandrett; along with Roger's parents are now enjoying heaven with him.

A visitation will be held on Friday, February 23, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 24 at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 29 W 260 Batavia Road, Warrenville, IL 60555. Burial will be at Garfield Cemetery west of St. Charles.

Memorials may be directed to Compassion International.
