James Anthony Newbill Obituary
Born: July 11, 1942
Died: July 11, 2014

James Anthony Newbill died peacefully Friday, July 11, 2014, on his 72nd birthday, at his home, surrounded by his wife, children, and their spouses.

He was born July 11, 1942 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Logan and Doris (Allinson) Newbill.

Jim was raised in Missouri and San Diego, and graduated from then-Aurora College in 1964. Jim married Marilyn Abhalter in 1968, a loving bond that has lasted for over 46 years. Jim served as a high school social studies teacher and baseball and wrestling coach for more than 35 years, first at Oswego and then at Geneva High School. Jim's devotion to high school athletics led him to serve as Geneva's athletic director for 10 years, where he introduced new sports, raised money for an elite weight room and gym, and modernized the school's sports facilities. He was particularly proud of his efforts to expand the participation of girls in high school athletics, believing that boys and girls should have equal opportunities to compete and excel. Jim also brought the state high school baseball tournament to the Cougars' stadium for a number of years, setting attendance and revenue records every time he organized it. For his efforts, the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association awarded him "Man of the Year" in 2005. He was also honored to be inducted into the Geneva High School Hall of Fame and to have a major wrestling tournament, the Jim Newbill Invitational, named after him.

After his retirement in 2001, Jim and Lynn focused their energies on traveling the world, visiting the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, India, Uganda and Europe to see their oldest son, and places closer to home with their travel group and family. Jim also continued to paint houses, a business he co-founded 40 years ago. He enjoyed being a devoted grandfather to A.J. and Gus, who he tried to teach baseball as soon as they could walk, and two more recent additions, Sebastian and Nathaniel. Jim was a loving husband and father every day of his life, and a model of kindness, integrity, and honor for all of us. Jim was proud of his achievements and the life he lived, but even prouder of the family he created, to whom he gave everything. We will continue to cherish his memory.

Jim is survived by his loving wife Lynn; and his children, Michael (Angeline) of Washington D.C., Marcie (Eric) Pickelsimer of St. Charles, and Mark (Kelly) of Chicago.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Stanley Newbill.

Funeral Mass will be held at noon Wednesday, July 16, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 6N491 Crane Road, St. Charles, with Msgr. Stephen Knox, celebrant.

Interment will be held privately.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 15, from 4 p.m.until the time of the celebration of his life at 7:30 p.m., where people can share favorite memories of Jim at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State St. (Route 38), Geneva.

Due to Jim's commitment to Geneva High School, its faculty, students, and athletes, we ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Jim Newbill Memorial Fund, Geneva School District, 227 N. Fourth St., Geneva, IL, to enhance the athletic facilities he so loved.
