ST. CHARLES – Leslie "Jack" Laydon Jr., 91, of St. Charles, died Monday, July 14, 2014, at his home.
He was born August 13, 1922, in Aurora.
Jack graduated from Blue Island High School before attending Knox College for the military. He entered into service on November 1942 as a Navigator Bombardier in the Air Force where he flew 37 missions. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Presidential Citation, Air Medal with seven clusters. He came out as a 1st Lieutenant in 1945.
He was an accomplished photographer, winner of the Photograph of America. He won awards from all over the world. He was instrumental in the Fox Valley Camera Club in the 1950s and 1960s. Jack also ran Jack's Toy Box in Batavia. He was an avid Golfer.
Jack married Shirley Merklebach in 1943; after she passed away he married Marilyn Montgomery in 1987.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn. His daughter, Merilee Davito. Three stepchildren, Michael (Glenda) Ruege, Matthew (Jennifer) Ruege and Michele (Richard) Haske. His two grandchildren, Jeremy (Darci) Davito and Amanda (Jeff) Sommers. His step-grandchildren, Ryan Haske, Brandon Ruege, Nicole Haske, Kristina Ruege, Sebastian Haske, Annabelle Haske and Alexa Ruege. Great grandson Zachary Davito. Also his brother Thomas (Sue) Laydon.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Yurs Funeral Home St. Charles. Burial will be private. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Hosanna Lutheran Church, 36W925 Red Gate Road, St. Charles. Contributions may be made to Hosanna Lutheran Church or Heinz VA Hospital.
