William McDermott Obituary

Died: June 3, 2011; in Oshkosh, Wis.

OSHKOSH, Wis. – William H. McDermott, 68, of Oshkosh, formerly of Geneva, passed away on June 3, 2011, in Oshkosh.

He was born on July 17, 1942, in Illinois, a son of the late Herbert W. and Eleanor (Johnson) McDermott.

Bill graduated from Geneva High School in 1960. He married the former Barbara Brandt on Sept. 30, 1972.

Bill was a "lifetime" military man, having served his country for 25 years in the U.S. Army, having served twice in Vietnam. He had been nominated and selected as the Military Person Of The Year. Bill greatly enjoyed his artistic abilities through the years and woodworking.

His memory will be cherished by his wife, Barbara, of 39 years of Oshkosh; two sons, Kevin (Kathy) McDermott of Hopkinville, Ky., and Daniel (Julie) Moe of McFarland, Wis.; a daughter, Karen (Brad Mechaelsen) Moe of Austin, Minn.; a sister, Shelia Self of Quitman, Ga.; and five grandchildren, Jonathon and Joshua McDermott, Casey Moe and Joleen and Alex Stewart. He is further survived by numerous other relatives and many dear friends.

There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held for Bill with full military honors, and this service will be held at noon Saturday, June 11, 2011, at McFarland Cemetery in McFarland, Wis. The family will greet those in attendance immediately following the service.

The Fiss & Bills-Poklasny Funeral Home, Oshkosh, is assisting the family with arrangements.

A good friend in high school. Sometime around 1965, I saw him in St. Charles. He told me that he was about to be drafted. Having just left the army, I told him to join the army, MP's, which he did......a good man is gone and will be missed
