Tilden Payne Meyers

Obituary Condolences

ROCKFORD — Tilden Payne Meyers, 80, died Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, at home, surrounded by his family. He was born Dec. 6, 1928, in Geneva, to George and Marion (Payne) Meyers. He graduated from Geneva High School in 1947 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1951, earning a bachelor's degree in animal husbandry. He was a member of the football team for four years, the track team for three years and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He was a season ticket holder and a member of the W Club at the university since graduation. Mr. Meyers married his loving wife Marilyn (Carlson) Meyers in 1951 in St. Charles. A member of the Farm Bureau and former member of the Belvidere School Board, he was employed as Kane County Farm Bureau assistant farm advisor and was a self-employed farmer, International Harvester Farm implement dealer and maintenance foreman for the Illinois tollway system. After retirement he worked part-time maintenance at Mutual Reinsurance Bureau of Cherry Valley. He was a member of Rockford First Assembly where he served as head usher for several years. With Tilden’s fierce sense of athletic competitiveness following retirement, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren compete on the soccer and football fields and baseball and softball diamonds locally and throughout the United States. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his children, Leeanne (Daniel) Scarpetta and their children Cody and Kelsey Scarpetta, Tim (Tina) Meyers and daughter Taylor Meyers, Thomas Meyers, Tilden Jr. (Venetia) Meyers and their children Jane, Alex and Zachary, and Lavonne (David ) Smiley their son Jake. He also is survived by a special niece and nephew, Brett and Melissa Meyers and their children, Mitchell, Karly and Jenna Meyers. He was predeceased by his parents, George Meyers and Marion Meyers Johnson; his daughter, Laurie Meyers Potter; and his brother Frank. The family extends a special thank you to the medical staff of Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers, Fla., and the medical flight crew of Air Trek of Punta Gorda, Fla., Hospice Care of America, and to Pastor Josh Yang of Rockford First Assembly. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory (Mulford Chapel),1860 S. Mulford Road, Rockford. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at Rockford First Assembly, 5950 Spring Creek. Pastor Ray Corlew will officiate.
