BATAVIA – Mary Lou Burgess (nee Cooper), 94, former longtime resident of Geneva, died peacefully in Batavia on February 2. Mary Lou was born in Aurora on Sept. 24, 1919. She attended West Aurora High School and received her degree from Northwestern University in 1941, where she was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority.|
She married Frank Kendall Burgess in 1942 and they were married for 63 years, until his death in 2005.
As a lifelong Geneva resident, Mary Lou was a community volunteer, serving on the school board, hospital Women's Board and other organizations. She was owner of Robin's Bookshop for 15 years and during that time, she served as President of the Third Street Merchants Association.
Mary Lou was a long time member of the First Congregational Church of Geneva UCC, where she looked forward to attending Sunday services and the wonderful musical programs.
She is survived by her four children Nancy Burgess True (John), Peter (Nancy), Bradford (Claudia) and Craig (Debra), as well as 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for May 2014, with details to follow at a later date.
