Kearney resident, 77
KEARNEY - Dorothy Ann Hopkinson, 77, of Kearney died Monday, May 7, 2012, at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church with the Rev. Joe Hannappel officiating.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church with a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m.
O'Brien-Straatmann-Redinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
She was born Jan. 7, 1935, in Morris, Ill., to George J. and Mildred (Armstrong) McGuan.
On June 1, 1957, she married Gale L. Salyard. They divorced July 1, 1966.
On Aug. 7, 1981, she married William G. Hopkinson in North Platte.
Survivors include her husband; sons, Thomas J. Salyard and his wife, Patricia, of Columbus and Patrick J. Salyard and his wife, Tracy, of La Vergne, Tenn.; daughters, Theresa A. Wadkins and her husband, Doug, of Lexington and Ann M. Callow of Overland Park, Kan.; stepsons, Wayne D. Hopkinson and his wife, Kris, of North Platte and Ron Hopkinson of North Salt Lake, Utah; stepdaughters, Sylvia E. Shenk and her husband, Steve, of South Jordan, Utah, and Bernice Young of West Valley, Utah; 20 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Mary Drescher of Aurora, Colo., and Eleanor Boza and her husband, John, of Joliet, Ill.
She received her education in a one-room country school and then graduated from high school at St. Angela Academy in Morris in 1953. She then moved to Omaha where she worked for United Airlines.
Most of her working years were in the accounting field. In 1964, she was employed by Allen's Self-Service Stores and stayed there for 21 years until the business was sold. Prior to the sale of the business, the office was moved from the Grand Island store to the North Platte store, so Dorothy was moved by the company to North Platte in 1980.
She and William lived in Las Vegas and Sun City, Ariz., before settling in Kearney. Dorothy enjoyed knitting, sewing, cooking, genealogy and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her son, Daniel J. Salyard, and brother, Robert McGuan.
