Glenda Ruby Leigh Obituary
Glenda Ruby Leigh

Born: October 14, 1919

Died: January 22, 2018

Glenda Ruby (Hafenrichter) Leigh, age 98, formerly of rural Oswego, passed away at the Holmstad Retirement Community in Batavia, Illinois on January 22, 2018.

She was born on October 14, 1919, the third child of Reuben and Amanda (Hummel) Hafenrichter who lived on a farm in Will County's Wheatland Township. Glenda graduated from East Aurora High School and North Central College. She was fortunate to experience 56 years of wedded happiness after marrying William J. Leigh on January 16, 1944.

Glenda was a popular teacher in the 6th grade at the East View School in Oswego for 20 years and even played with students during recess up until the time that playing frosted her lungs. Glenda was known for her thoughtfulness in tutoring neighborhood children when needed, writing letters to inmates, and offering assistance to anyone in need. She always thought from other people's point of view and tried to make their lives as comfortable as possible.

Glenda was a farm wife who not only took care of 3 sons, a large garden, and a large lawn with orchard, but also helped on the farm by driving tractors, unloading corn, and offering an extra hand whenever needed. After hay baling crews performed a hard day's work, her ample barbeque sandwiches and German chocolate cake were greatly appreciated.

Glenda was a very active member of the Oswego Prairie United Methodist Church for the first 80 years of life and held numerous positions of responsibility. She joined the Batavia United Methodist Church in 2000.

She is survived by son, Douglas (Kathy) Leigh of Plano; son, Mark (Joni) Leigh of Morris; daughter-in-law, Doris Leigh of Johnstown, Colorado; brother-in-law, Robert Leigh of Oswego; 6 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husband, William Leigh; son, James Leigh; sister, Uarda (Hafenrichter) Henderson; brother, Everett Hafenrichter; and brother, John Hafenrichter.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at DUNN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME with CREMATORY, 1801 S. Douglas Rd., Oswego. Remembrances and photos may be left or viewed at www.dunnfamilyfuneralhome.com.

Memorials can be made to the Oswegoland Heritage Association, PO Box 23, Oswego, IL 60543.
