Dennis J. Kerkman

Dennis J. Kerkman, 72, of Tucson, Ariz., passed away from ALS on Nov. 23, 2013.
He was born on March 5, 1941, the son of Claude and Dorothy Kerkman. He resided in Twin Lakes and Walworth County, Wis. He graduated from St. Alphonsus, New Munster and St. Marys High School.
He graduated with a BS degree in Aeronautical Engineering from St. Louis University.
On Nov. 5, 1966, in Woodbridge, England he was united in marriage to Nancy ONeil of Boston, Mass.
Commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force in 1962. Assigned to duty in England and Vietnam. Flew 231 combat missions in Southeast Asia. Joined New Jersey Air National Guard, Puerto Rico Air National Guard and Tucson Air National Guard. March 14, 1996, was promoted to Brigadier General and Commander of Arizona Air National Guard after 35 years of service in the U.S. Air Force
. Some of his major awards: Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star
Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, nine oak leaf clusters. He was an excellent pilot and respected leader.
Dennis was an unassuming, hardworking man of integrity, with a great sense of humor and compassion for his fellow man. He was most of all a man who loved his family.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nancy; sons, Tim (Maggie), Scott and Michael (Kevin); grandchildren, Luke and Rina; siblings, Blanche Kerkman, June Wiemer, Mark (Sandy) Kerkman; nieces and nephews; Lisa Wantland, Stacy Wiemer, Jodi Lundin, Rob Wiemer, Holly French, Jason and Adam Kerkman.
Preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of Dennys life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013 at 11 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Tucson, Ariz. Interment will be private.
Memorial donations to the ALS Association or Catholic Relief Services have been suggested.
Three words that sum up Dennis are Love, Humor and Compassion.
