1924 - 2012
Eugene Wiersum, 88, of Kenosha, passed away peacefully, Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at Aurora Medical Center.
He was born on Sept. 1, 1924, to the late Edward and Henrietta (Vander Veer) Wiersum in Kenosha. He was educated in local Kenosha schools, graduating from Mary D. Bradford High School in 1942. After completing military service, Gene graduated from the University of Wisconsin
-Madison in 1949.
On June 7, 1952, he married Dorothy C. Beezhold in Chicago, Ill. She preceded him in death on Feb. 6, 2010.
Gene entered the U.S. Army
Air Corp in March of 1943. He was in the 99th Wing and the 394th Bomb Squadron. He served in the European Theatre of Operations and was honorably discharged in October 1945.
Gene started his career at Nash Motors in the master mechanics department in June of 1942. Upon graduation from UW-Madison, he began his career as an industrial engineer at AMC. While working at AMC, he continued his education at both Purdue University
and the University of Michigan
. He retired in 1981 after a 39-year career.
Gene was very strong in his faith and an active member of Christian Reformed Church.
Gene was an avid bike rider, avid reader and loved outdoor activities. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Allenwood Estates Condo Association. Gene was an intellectual and sharp man who shared his knowledge and inspired wisdom to all. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
Gene is survived by his loving children, Roxane (Bill) Sobanski of Kenosha and Todd (Peggy) Wiersum of Woodbury, Minn.; his grandchildren, Carrie (Michael) Fox of Gurnee, Joel Sobanski of Milwaukee, Valerie (Dean) Willer of St. Paul, Minn., Stephanie (Luke) Tornquist of St. Paul, Minn., and Leslie Wiersum of Seattle, Wash., and his great grandchildren, Evelyn Fox, Jackson Willer, Ella Tornquist and Piper Tornquist.
He is preceded in death by a sister, Florence and a brother, Clarence.
Funeral services for Gene will be held on Friday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m. at Christian Reformed Church (7506 25th Ave.). Interment with Full Military Honors will follow at Green Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bruch Funeral Home and on Friday morning from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church. Memorials would be appreciated to Christian Reformed Church.
