John Arnett

1923 - 2014

John Arnett, 90, passed away on Monday July 21, 2014, at his home in Kenosha.

John was born Oct. 8, 1923, in Wichita, Kan. to the late Grove and Eula (Hyatt) Arnett. He spent his early years in Wichita and Kansas City, Kansas before enlisting in the Navy. He served from 1942 to 1946 in the Navy Armed Guard as a gunners mate 3/C; seeing combat in all three theaters during World War II. John was awarded numerous medals including a Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and the Russian Liberty Medal for participating in the deadly Murmansk, Russia run.

In 1944 John married Arlene Grimm of Kenosha and lived there from 1942-1974. He was best known as the shoe man at the Kenosha J.C. Penny Co. store where he worked for 25 years. He also served as assistant chief of the Kenosha Auxiliary Police and was active with the Kenosha Band Boosters serving as its president and receiving its Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 1974 John and Arlene moved to Cannon Falls, Minn., where they operated a mens clothing and family shoe store. Following the 1985 death of his wife, John sold the business, retired and travelled. In 1989 he moved back to Kenosha marrying Dolores (Zabrauskis) Mitka.

John was a member of the Danish Brotherhood Lodge #14 and the American Legion Post No. 0021 in Kenosha and was a life member of the V.F.W. Post No. 4452 in Cannon Falls. John enjoyed being with family and friends, traveling, cruising, dancing, attending reunions of the Illinois/Wisconsin USN Armed Guard WWII Veterans and golf (two holes in one). He was an active member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Kenosha.

John is survived by his wife, Dolores; his son Gary (Margaret) of Nashville, N.C.; granddaughter Kristen (Arnett) Durham of Roanoke Rapids, NC; great grandsons Austen and Andrew Durham of Roanoke Rapids; step-sons Michael (Gloria) Mitka of River Forest, Ill., and Jeffrey (Debi) Mitka of Kenosha; step-grandsons Ted and Nathan Mitka of River Forest and Joe and Taylor Mitka of Kenosha; sister Hattie Delma Rae James of Tulsa, Okla; and sister-in-law Pat Anderson (Grimm) of Burnsville, Minn. Along with his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Yvonne Richards (Arnett) of Windsor, Mo.

A visitation will be held for John on Saturday, July 26, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. until time of service at 9:30 a.m. at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 5601 Washington Rd, Kenosha, WI 53144. Interment will be held at Sunset Ridge Memorial Park Cemetery followed by military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Lord of Life Lutheran Church or Kenosha Hospice Alliance, Inc, 10220 Prairie Ridge Blvd, Pleasant Prairie, Wis. 53158 would be appreciated by the family.
