Shirley Jean DeMet
1935 - 2013
Shirley Jean DeMet passed away peacefully on Feb. 26, 2013, after a courageous 13 year battle with breast cancer
She was born Aug. 19, 1935, in Wheeling, W.V. to Jessie and Noble Dixon. Shirley graduated from Cressona High School in Pennsylvania with honors. She then attended and graduated from the Reading Hospital School of Medical Technology and Juniata College in 1957. Shirley married Kenneth N. Dearolf who preceded her in death. In 1991, she married James Hercules DeMet in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Shirley was certified as a Specialist in Blood Bank Technology from the American Association of Blood Banks and American Society of Clinical Pathologists in 1974. Her career began at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center. She later moved to Wisconsin where she also worked at St Catherines Hospital in Kenosha and St Lukes Hospital in Racine where she was the Blood Bank Supervisor. For the last 21 years, Shirley was employed by ARUP in Salt Lake City at the University of Utah Hospital in Transfusion Services. Recently she was awarded the Runner-up Employee of the Year. Shirley truly loved her work and was a very dedicated employee. She will miss the friendships of her fellow blood-bankers and be missed as well.
Shirley was a member of the Risen Life Church, where together she and her husband, Jim, sang in the choir and played in the bell choir. She enjoyed singing hymns and worshiping the Lord. Her favorite things to do with her husband, Jim were going to the opera, Hale Theater, The Shakespearean Festival and beloved Lady Red Rocks of the University of Utah Gymnastics Team. Shirley loved to travel, and the highlights of her travels were her trip to Africa and her last vacation in Sanibel Island, Fla. She never had any children of her own but was very beloved by her kids and grandkids.
The family would like to thank Dr. Sandra Buys and the staff at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Avalon Valley Rehabilitation Center and Bristol Hospice for their kind and caring service.
Survived by husband, Jim; 12 children; 31 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents and grandson, Justin Lane.
In lieu of flowers, Shirleys family suggests donations be made to the University of Utah Womens Gymnastics department in her name.
