Harold Nuernberg

1930 - 2018

Harold Nuernberg died after a short battle with pancreatic cancer on July 12, 2018, in Kenosha, Wis., at the age of 87.

Harold was born Sept. 19, 1930, in Friedrchshain, Wohlu, Prussia to Eduard and Erna (Gretschmann) Nurnberg. He married Erika Gundlach on April 9, 1951, in Germany. She preceded Harold in death on December 24, 1998.

At a young age, Harold demonstrated an innate understanding of mechanical engineering, aided by his keen eyesight, dexterous hands, and problem solving abilities. During World War II, Harold used these abilities to survive the horrors of war by trading with Allied troops on the black market. Shortly before the end of the war, Harold met and fell in love with an extraordinarily beautiful young woman, his future wife, Erika, who he often said was out of his league. After the war, he attended trade school in Germany, earning a certification in tool making. They emigrated to the United States with two-year-old Hans April 1952, arriving in New Orleans on the General Bellow. They were assigned to a boat as a displaced person due to their Ohio sponsor cancelling his agreement. Fortunately, a farmer in Fort Morgan, CO agreed to sponsor them. Opa remembered Fort Morgan as having lots of sunshine. Upon arrival, he went to work for Fort Morgan Mill and found a one-bedroom apartment to rent. While living in Fort Morgan, Harold participated in the last cattle drive from Fort Morgan to Denver with cowboys on horses, guns and chuck wagons. Over a short period of time the couple welcomed Willi into their home.

In 1955, they left Fort Morgan moving to Kenosha, Wis. where daughter Elke was born. Harold worked for a short time at Johnson Motors then moved on to American Motors and ultimately Chrysler as a machinist until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Ella Pustol Nuernberg, two children, Hans (Kathy) Nuernberg and Elke (Ed) Gramza; daughter-in-law Mary Nuernberg; four Grandchildren, Brian (Meredith) Maseman, Sarah (Bill) Thomas, Allison Supernaw and Kevin Nuernberg; two Great Grandchildren, William Thomas and Natha Thomas. Also many step-children, -grandchildren and -great grandchildren.

Along with his parents Eduard & Erna (Gretschmann) Nurnberg, Harold was preceded in death by his wife Erika (Gundlach) Nuernberg; and a son Willi Nuernberg.

A visitation will be held Monday, July 16, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon at First Christian Church, 13022 Wilmot Road (Hwy "C"), Kenosha, with funeral services to follow at 12 Noon. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Harold's life. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Aurora Health Care Foundation would be appreciated by the family. Condolences can be sent to [email protected].

The family would like to thank Candice, Kirsten and Kelly, hospice caregivers for their compassion, care and dedication to Harold.
