Ralph Edwin Gussarson

1925 - 2014

Ralph Edwin Gussarson, 88, lifelong resident of Antioch, Ill., passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Vista Medical Center East, Waukegan, Ill.

He was born May 2, 1925, the son of the late Hugo and Edith (Olson) Gussarson on the property now owned by Waste Management and Antioch Tire, where, as a young boy he loved to fish and hunt. Ralph graduated from Antioch High School in 1942, and joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 where he served during WWII in the South Pacific, and was discharged in 1946. He received military training at Norte Dame, South Bend, Ind.

On Oct. 8, 1949, he married Ruthella Keister at the United Methodist Church, Antioch. Ralph was a charter and life member of the VFW Post #4551, Antioch, where he was the Bingo Chairman. He was also a life member of the American Legion Post #771, Gurnee, Ill. In 1954, he joined the Antioch Moose Lodge #525 and received a Fellowship Decree and served as Governor from 1989-1991. Additionally, Ralph had served as past president of the Antioch Twsp. Republican Club, Precinct #2 committeeman, Alderman of Felters Subdivision, and Antioch Beautification committee member. He enjoyed gardening and playing golf. In 1982, Ralph retired as a die cast machinist from Outboard Motor Corp, Waukegan, Ill.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 65 years, Ruthella; his children, Bruce (Angela) of Morton Grove, Ill., Joan (Troy) Shea of Maricopa, Ariz., Daryl Duffy (Arlene) of Antioch, LuAnn (Alfred) Ultes of Antioch, and Alan (Caryn) of Antioch; grandchildren, Tricia Fandre, Lisa Chavez, Adam Chavez, Kristy Gussarson, Jennifer Gussarson, Jason Ultes, Jeffrey Ultes, Daryl Renee Gussarson, and Michael Gussarson; 23 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; his sister, Ruth Winfield of Kenosha, Wis.; several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by a brother, Otto Gussarson.

Funeral services with military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2014, at the STRANG FUNERAL HOME OF ANTIOCH, 1055 Main St. (Rte. 83). Interment will be private. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to

8 p.m. Thursday (today) at the funeral home, with VFW and Moose services at 7 p.m. INFO 847-395-4000.
