Robert Durden Hackworthy

1929 - 2013

Robert Durden Hackworthy, 84, of New Richmond, Wis., died Nov. 30, 2013, at Arthur Rose Assisted Living Facility.

He was born March 4, 1929, in Hinsdale, Ill., the son of Clement R. and Louise (Durden) Hackworthy. He graduated from Wauwatosa High School in Wauwatosa, Wis., during which he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He earned his degree in Architectural Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VA Tech.), in Blacksburg, Va. Robert was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant upon graduation from college.

He was a Korean War Veteran in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a 1st Lieutenant and Company Commander of the 185th Combat Engineering Battalion of I Corps that cleared war mines on the 38th Parallel prior to assisting in the building of Freedom Gate Village and PW compounds. He was honored to receive the Bronze Star and two Accommodations Medals.

He was Principle in the architectural and engineering firm of Lindl-Schutte, subsequently becoming Schutte, Mochon, Hackworthy, Juerisson, and served as its President prior to retirement. He was proud to have been a Principle in charge of education facilities throughout the state of Wisconsin. He was a Vestryman and Senior Warden for St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Kenosha, Wis., and later a member of St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Minocqua, Wis. He also attended St. Anthony on the Desert Episcopal Church while living in their winter home in Fountain Hills, Ariz., and St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Hudson, Wis., while living in New Richmond, Wis.

He was most blessed to have been married for 61 years to his beloved wife, Nancy Lukens, (Roanoke, Va.) who he called Precious. They loved life together playing golf, traveling, and enjoying their beloved Homestead on Island Lake in Manitowish Waters and Boulder Junction, Wis. They were also blessed with their five children, ten grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Lukens) Hackworthy; one daughter, Nancy (Lukens) Snyder (Brian) of Mounds View, Minn.; four sons, CR (Cynthia) of Hudson, Wis., Travis (Kim) of Chandler, Ariz., Herbert (Sue) of Arena, Wis., and Thomas (Kathy) of Hudson, Wis.; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and brother, Clement of Sagle, Id.

Memorial and Committal services will be held at

11 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Minocqua, WI.
