Jefferson Layson Obituary

PARIS Jefferson Vimont Layson, Jr., husband of Patty Woodford Layson, died on Monday, December 24, 2012. He was born in Lexington, KY March 21, 1938 and grew up in Millersburg. He was the son of the late J. Vimont and Ruth Womack Layson. He is also survived by his sons Jefferson Vimont Layson III, Bowling Green, KY and Stephen Charles Layson, Stuart, FL, a granddaughter, Jane Marie Layson, a stepson, James B. Logan and a stepdaughter, Mary King Minko. He was a graduate of Millersburg Military Institute, attended Trinity College, Hartford CT, and was a graduate of Denison University, Granville, OH, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Law, a member of the U.K. Law Journal and was a member and President of Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity. He was a member of the Kentucky and American Bar Associations. He practiced law in Paris and Lexington from 1963 until his retirement in 2000. During that time he served as a Hearing Officer for the Kentucky Workman's Compensations Board during the term of Governor Louie Nunn; President of the Bourbon County Bar Association; Bourbon County Trial Commissioner; Assistant Bourbon County Attorney and Millersburg City attorney for 26 years. He was very active in the Republican Party for many years, having served 12 years as Bourbon County Republican Chairman. He also served as Sixth District Field Representative during the term of U. S. Senator Marlow Cook. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Paris, Kentucky where he served as a Deacon, Elder, Trustee, Sunday School Teacher and choir member. He was a former member and past President of the Paris Lions Club where he performed many years in their annual Dixieland Show. He was a former member and Director of the Paris-Bourbon County Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of The Kentucky Chapter of The Society of Colonial Wars. He was a member of the Lexington Club, an avid fan and former breeder of thoroughbred horses and a member of the Keeneland Club. He was a loyal fan of U.K. sports, having attended his first game in 1946 and having been a booster, a Fellow and season ticket holder in football and basketball since his graduation from law school. He attended U.K.'s winning NCAA basketball tournaments in 1958, 1978 and 1998. Funeral services will be 11am Saturday, December 29, at Hinton-Turner Funeral Home by Rev. Desiree Youngblood with burial in Paris Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Bill Hickman, Charles Layson, David Minko, David Woodford, Buck Woodford and Will Cox. Honorary bearers will be William Buntin, Henry Prewitt, Jim Lovell, Nick Sanders, Ted Kuster, Scott Robertson, Joe (Jock) Conley, William M. Layson, Larry Pope, Zed Layson, William K. Suter, Charlie Owen, Charlie Duncan and Brothers of the Gamma Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8pm Friday.
