ELKINS Wanda Lea, 84, loving mother, grandmother and sister, passed into eternal life January 29, 2013. She was born August 14, 1928 to Martha and Cecil Denton in Bristol, VA. She worked at The Weaving Company in Bristol until she was recruited to Monroe Machine Company to play in their women's basketball league. She loved basketball and excelled in the league with the nickname of "Star". She met her late husband, Bob Elkins while playing basketball for him. In 1967 they moved to Lexington when Bob joined IBM. She enjoyed finding beautiful antiques at auction, gardening and in her later years began modeling appearing in local print and TV ads. But her greatest joy was her family; they were her life. She is survived by her children Kim Elkins Hackney (Tom) and Tim Elkins (Elizabeth), Danbury, CT, two grandsons, Ethan and Ian Elkins and a sister Charlotte Jones, Culpepper, VA. Funeral services will be 1pm Saturday at Milward Man O' War with visitation beginning at 10am. Burial will be in the Lexington Cemetery. To Wanda's family, I want to express my deepest sympathy in her passing. Wanda was not only beautiful on the outside she was one of the sweetest ladies I have ever met. We were in the same exercise class and were Red Hat sisters. I still have the nicest red hat that she gave me. I admired her modeling but she made light of her success. She will be missed my many and I just wanted you to know it.
May God comfort each of you in this time of sorrow.
