Charles E. Palmer Jr.

Charles E. Palmer Jr., a retired Lexington attorney, died Tuesday. He was 79.

Mr. Palmer practiced law at the Lexington office of Stites & Harbison for most of his 41-year career, his wife, Betty Jo Martin Palmer, said Wednesday.

Born in Shelbyville, Mr. Palmer simultaneously served as president of the Student Government Association, the Inter Fraternity Council and the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity at the University of Kentucky before graduating in 1957, his wife said.

Mr. Palmer graduated from the UK Law School in 1958 and was the first attorney in Kentucky without a medical degree to be inducted into the American College of Legal Medicine, she said.

Mr. Palmer was a former chairman of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Commission, a former director of the Bluegrass Sportsmen's League, a Kentucky conservation officer, and former President of the Kentucky State Rifle and Pistol Association. He was a founding member of the Bluegrass Chapter of Ducks Unlimited.

He was also a founding member and past president of the St. Ives Law Journal Club. He was formerly on the board of directors of several groups, including the Lexington Jaycees, the Florence Crittenton Home, and Big Brothers.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Palmer is survived by a son, Charles Rodgers Palmer of Arlington, Va.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at Christ Church Cathedral in Lexington, with services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.
