SCHUSTER Dr. John Winand, 54, of Lexington, Ky passed away January 18, 2013 at St. Joseph's Hospital. Born October 19, 1958 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of Patricia Corbett Schuster and the late Carl G. Schuster of Point of Rocks, MD. Dr. Schuster graduated from Brunswick High School in Brunswick, MD in 1976 where he played an active role in the Railroaders Marching Band, serving as drum major his senior year, and winning the John Philips Sousa award that same year. John graduated Cum Laude from the University of Alabama with a B.S. degree in Special Education. In addition to serving as drum major for the university's Million Dollar Band he was a member of the Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta academic honoraries. He continued his education at Columbia University in New York City and the University of Kentucky, earning a Master of Arts in Special Education and a Doctorate of Special Education respectively. He began his career on faculty at the University of Kentucky in the Department of Early Childhood, Special Education, and Rehabilitation Counseling in 1989 when he received the department's first federal grant to prepare rural special educators in Kentucky. For the next 20 years, Dr. Schuster compiled an impressive vita, serving as Director of Graduate Studies, teaching graduate coursework and guiding the research of many masters and doctoral students. He served on the boards of numerous community service and professional organizations and was widely published and cited in his field of expertise. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his daughter, MaryAllen Schuster of Nashville, TN, siblings, Tim Schuster of Malvern, Pa and Suzan Sterling of Pearland, TX, five nieces and nephews, Andrew and Mike Schuster of Malvern, and Erin, Matthew and David Sterling of Pearland and many friends and colleagues who will remember Dr. Schuster as an intelligent, hard working and fun loving die-hard Bama fan. Visitation will be held at 9am Thursday, January 24, at Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary, 605 Hill N Dale Road, Lexington, KY; a Mass will be celebrated at 11am with a reception following at the church.
