Katheryn Loughrin

LOUGHRIN Katheryn H., on June 16, 2014, Katheryn H. Loughrin, (Grandma K) passed peacefully surrounded by family. The fourth of five children of Owen Hudson and Norma Tompkins, she was born December 19, 1921 in Cadillac, MI. In 1943, she joined the Women's Army Air Corps as a codebreaker in the Pacific where she became a Staff Sergeant. She was often the subject of recruitment photos. It was there in the Philippines, halfway around the world, she met John "Jack" Loughrin, also of Cadillac. The couple returned home after the war, then married in 1947. They had five children: Norah Marcinek (Stanley), Susannah Brodel (Jon), Shannon Shields (Greg), John Loughrin (Linda), and Owen Loughrin (Deborah). She adored her twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and Susannah. Along with her husband, she graduated from University of Michigan in 1949 with an A.B. in History and Elementary Education. From her first job in a one-room school house in Michigan, "Kay" was a devoted teacher. Upon moving to Lexington, KY in 1963 she taught in George Washington Carver Elementary, earned an M.A. from University of Kentucky, and later retired from Meadowthorpe Elementary in 1985. She loved her family, children, holidays, entertaining, her cabin in Michigan, nature, gardening, and pool parties. The family would like to thank St. Joseph Hospice Care, Lexington Country Place, and Dr. Thomas Von Unrug and his staff for their outstanding care. A visitation will be held at Kerr Bros. Funeral Home, 463 E. Main Street, Lexington, KY, Saturday June 21, 4-8PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass.
