MAYS LICK - Fred Chumbler Jr, 86, of May's Lick passed away Sun, Jan 9, 2011 at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. He was a well-known educator in the Mason County School System. Mr. Chumbler was born in Benton, KY in Marshall County on March 11, 1924, son of the late Fred W. and Mirtie Karnes Chumbler. He attended a one-room school in Marshall County and graduated from Calvert City High School 1936-1940 where he was co-valedictorian. He then enrolled in Murray State University at age 16 and attended until 1942 and transferred to the University of Kentucky. He served his country in the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Division from 1943 to 1946. He then returned to UK and graduated in 1947 with a BS in Education. He was employed by May's Lick High School where his career in Vocational Agriculture began. He continued his education at UK and received his MS in Education in 1952 and in 1962 he received his EDS in Education from UK. Mr. Chumbler taught in the Mason County School System for 40 years and taught Vocational Agriculture and was Assistant Principal at Mason County High School for 18 years and after retirement served as a substitute teacher for 16 years. He was awarded the Honorary American Farmer FFA degree at the National Convention in Kansas City, MO. He was a member of the May's Lick Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the Board of Deacons and taught Sunday School for 55 years. He was a Charter Member of the May's Lick Lions Club where he had served several offices including as past president. He served as Secretary of the Germantown Fair Board since 1991 and was an Advisory Director of Vo Ag on the fair board since 1947. He was an RSVP volunteer and served as a member of the Mason County Health Board and the Buffalo Trace Health Board. He was also an active member of the Baptist Student Union at Murray State and UK while a student there. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Anne Case Chumbler. Three children, Carol (John) Walker of Maysville, Fred (Jeanne) Chumbler III of Lawrenceburg, KY and Jennifer (Pat) Gilligan of Maysville. Three grandchildren, Rebecca Jones, Allison Biggs and Brock Gilligan and step grandson Tye Gilligan. Two great-grandchildren, Jackson & Jonathan Jones. A brother, Joe Karnes Chumbler of Grand Rivers, KY. He was preceded in death by four brothers, W.W. Chumbler, Ray Chumbler, Robert Chumbler and Ross Chumbler and a step grandson, Willie Gilligan. Services will be conducted at 11am Thu, Jan 13, 2011 at May's Lick Baptist Church with Rev. David C. Cheek and Rev. Bill Boldt officiating. Interment will follow in the May's Lick Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be Richard Poe, John Poe, Alan Rushmeyer, James Rushmeyer, Ray Chumbler, Jr. and Ray Chumbler III. Honorary Pallbearers will be Deacons of the May's Lick Baptist Church, Jerry Tolle, Gary Truesdell, Jerry Nash, Donald Jefferson, Buddy Cropper ,Ronald Lawrence and Bill Kachler.
