Pamela Sexton Obituary

SEXTON Pamela Papka died Thursday, June 12, 2014, at her home in Lexington, surrounded by the love of her family. She passed peacefully after a year-long battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Sexton, her older brother Gerald E. Peyton, and her parents Ouita Peyton, nee Zimmerman, and Perry E. Peyton. Pam leaves her children to celebrate and remember her life: Ouita Papka (Christopher) Michel of Midway; Paige Papka (Travis) Walker of Lexington and Perry Aaron Papka of Frankfort; stepchildren Rebecka Byrne Sexton of Roanoke, Virginia; Robert Byrne Sexton of Sunnyvale, California; grandchildren Willa Dru Michel, Wyatt VanArsdall Walker, Julia Thomas Walker and Lily Katherine Schade; sister, Jacquelin (Tom) Buchanan of Fort Collins, Colorado; her nephews, Eric Buchanan, Bruce, Brian and Greg Peyton; the father of her children, Dr. Raymond Papka; and many beloved cousins and dear friends. A poet, writer and artist, Pam was born January 13, 1946, in Thermopolis, Wyoming, to Ouita and Perry E. Peyton. She was influenced early on by her parents' passion for education and volunteerism and found great encouragement in other pursuits from her beloved grandparents Aaron Rufus and Molly Myrtle Zimmerman with whom she spent countless hours learning to play the piano and listening to opera on the phonograph. Even as a young student, Pam had a particular facility for science, writing, and art--subjects that engendered life-long passions. Cheerleading and car-hopping helped her keep her balance. She lived in Laramie, Wyoming, New Orleans, Louisiana and San Juan, Puerto Rico, before moving to Kentucky in the early 1970s. Pam was a loving mother, grandmother and an excellent cook--a skill and passion she passed to all of her children, along with her love of music, art, politics and community involvement. Her home always had space for drawing, sculpting, painting or even batiking. The music room was filled with various musical instruments and stacks of sheet music, the walls filled with art and the shelves stacked with books. Her mother often remarked that "Pam knew no strangers," and she had a gift for friendship and connection with others. The outdoors truly fed Pam's soul and the beauty and originality found on the walls of the Sexton home extended into her garden. That special space reflected the love she and Bob had for nature, which also took them on numerous hiking and fishing trips, often to her beloved home state of Wyoming. Her life was enriched by a diversity of professional experiences from banking to business writing to women's health and especially by her passion for and participation in the arts and creative pursuits. Having studied at the University of Kentucky, Pam completed a Masters of Fine Arts in Writing at Spalding University in Louisville in 2003. She also studied sculpture at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Cambridge Arts Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She was a founding member of KaBooM (the Kentucky Book Mafia), a writing group dedicated to excellence in writing and advocacy for literary arts and artists, and Mosaic, a group of women poets. Her written work was widely published in Kentucky, and she was the recipient of the Oswald creative award in poetry from the University of Kentucky and the Leadingham Prize for Poetry from the Frankfort Arts Foundation. She continued her passion for learning and the arts in tenures as Chair of the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning in Lexington and Board Vice-President of the Kentucky Folk Art Center in Morehead. She also served on the boards of the Lexington Children's Theatre, the Lexington Arts and Cultural Council, and the Lexington Philharmonic. A fierce advocate for improving Kentucky's schools, Pam was a founding member of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence, a nationally recognized citizens' organization now in its fourth decade of working to ensure all Kentuckians receive the highest-quality education. Her active service continued until her death. Pam's words to members of the Prichard Committee marking the group's 25th anniversary convey the sentiments her countless friends and loved ones would express to her: "Thank you for being a persistent ray of light and heat and sound, for changing directions, creating directions, for climbing the walls for reflecting what is good and great about Kentucky." A celebration of Pam's life will be held at 11am Wednesday, June 18 at Midway Christian Church in Midway, Kentucky with a reception to follow at Holly Hill Inn-all are welcome. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 17 from 5-8pm at Milward Funeral Home, 159 North Broadway in Lexington. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in Pam's memory to two of her most beloved organizations: Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence, 271 West Short Street, Suite 202, Lexington, KY 40502, In Memoriam for Pamela Papka Sexton, or the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning, 251 West 2nd Street, Lexington, KY 40502, In Memoriam for Pamela Papka Sexton. www.milwardfuneral.com

205 state street...1970's
Walking into the Papka's house with Paige, as Perry is walking out with a mouth full of soap.
Playing in their back yard and Gabe's.
Rollerskating for miles on that street daily...with ropes tied to our junkyard bikes to tow...
And kickball, if you put it on their roof it was a home run.
To sit for twenty and just think of all the things that Pam was a part of.
Even 35 years detached, she, and those memories, still remain a part of my "seemingly strong but sometimes brittle Anchor" to this world.
So many good times, wouldn't have changed a thing.
My best to all of you,
Peter L

I first knew Pam in writing workshops at UK, and from then to any time I saw her after, she radiated a warmth that I know will stay with me for a long time. I am so glad to have known her and I am just one of a great many who will miss her. My deepest condolences to her family.

I met Pam when Travis and Paige became friends and wanted a play date…..nearly 40 years ago. She was a beam of light with that smile and those eyes, and I enjoyed our time together watching our children be friends. Over the past several years, we watched as those two kids found each other again, fell in love, and braided their lives together. We shared the joy of witnessing that love and the grandkids from that union. It felt like coming home for the four of us, I think; Pam, Paige, Travis, and me. I was so looking forward to getting to know her again and spending our lives sharing the joys of our kids and grandkids and some mutual love of the arts. Pam was many great things, as you will read in the papers. But Pam was also many small things, quiet things. A smile here, and nod there, a hand held, a poem written, just when it meant the most. Her grown children evidence a true moral compass, delight in creativity, and share a humble appreciation of one another and the natural world around us. Pam inspired me. Her loss is felt on every level, in every magnitude.

I worked with Pam on the Carnegie Center Board, especially with the Hall of Fame Committee. What a gracious, tactful, and well informed person she was. Beyond those good qualities, she welcomed everyone with an accepting smile, a deep interest in them personally, and a willingness to be open and sharing. She will be sorely missed, not only for her valuable contributions to this community, but even more for her courage and inspiration. Jeannette

Pam, a beautiful and unique friend with a bottomless soul of giving. I am blessed to posses not only memories of an exceptional lady but also some of her glorious art works, poems and pastels, her passions.

John and I had those wonderful open faced cheese tomato onion and hot sauce sandwiches today in remberance of the many you made on State Street in the 70's

This is a tremendous loss, of a personal friend and a friend to Kentucky. I love her so much. On the way home from Western KY late tonight (I decided to come home from Family Reunion one day early, and wasn't sure why…) out of nowhere there was this magnificent huge golden moon which kept peeking at me from behind hills and tree lines in the distance. For about 20 miles I kept trying to catch a better glimpse of it but could only catch the briefest glance each time.

For the duration of my time in Rough River I was out of reach for texting and online stuff, so hadn't seen any messages all day. Suddenly I hear the familiar little tinkling sound that lets me know I have a text -- I figured, "This message has probably been waiting for me half the day and I'm just now in reach, back in 3G, so that it can come through; wonder who it's from?" I took a quick glance and see it is my sister Helen, who very seldom texts me, with a message that she's sorry to hear that Pam Sexton has passed away.

Oh.

At that exact moment finally the land turned in just such a way that the moon was right in front of me, completely unobstructed, and stayed like that for the duration of the drive to Lexington. I turned on the radio, irrationally hoping someone would say something about Pam and there was the replay of Woodsongs with bluegrass music pouring out of the radio, and I began thinking of her trips to collect folk art all over Eastern KY, and then of the week we spent together in Buckhorn doing a joint artist residency, and then the times sitting on the porch across from Woodland Park, and then the day I first met her when Balin was a tiny baby, and then the day she taught me to make ratatouille and then the times we spent together trying to secure a place in posterity for Syncopated, Inc., and then making Christmas cookies, and sitting at the kitchen table with Bobby talking politics and then the women artists group final feast in the dining room and then, and then, and then…. It was if she spoke to me through the moon, and set off a chain of a hundred memories.

So when I finally arrived in Lexington about 11:00 tonight I had to drive straight to Kentucky Avenue and just sit in front of the house, where all was dark and quiet. I really had to be at the house to begin to try and grok the loss. My unique and priceless friend was greatly loved and will be sorely missed.
