Ellsworth Mason Obituary

MASON Ellsworth Goodwin, 96, husband of Joan Mason, died Monday, October 14, 2013 at the U.K. - Good Samaritan Hospital. Besides his wife, survivors include one son, Sean (Laura) Mason, Lexington; two daughters, Kay (Bill) Morice, Clarks-ville, MD, and Joyce (Jim) Lande, Arlington, VA; two grandsons, three grand-daughters and one great- grandson. He was born in Waterbury, CT on Aug 25, 1917. He attended public schools in Oakville and Watertown. From 1934 to 1948, he studied at Yale University, with a few years off working at the Board of Economic Warfare in Washington and serving in the U.S. Navy Construction Battalions on Tarawa and Eniwetok in the Central Pacific. He held B.A., M.A. and PhD. degrees from Yale, taught English literature at Williams College, Marlboro College and Colorado College, and lectured at a wide range of colleges and universities. After graduating from Yale, he worked in the Reference Department of the Yale University Library and later on the library staffs of the University of Wyoming, Montana State University, Colorado College, Hofstra University and the University of Colorado at Boulder, serving as Director of the last three. In 1976, he was nominated to run for President of the American Library Association. He served as consultant in the planning of many library buildings, held two Architecture Awards and taught planning at the University of Illinois, School of Librarianship. In 1973, he was awarded an Honorary L.H.D. by Hofstra University. His ten books and more than a hundred professional articles in four different fields were published in the U.S., England, Canada, Italy, France, Germany and Taiwan. An avid book collector for thirty years, his collections and papers are placed in Rare Book Rooms at Hofstra, the University of Tulsa, the University of Texas in Austin and the National Archives of Canada in Ottawa. A memorial service will be held at 11am Saturday at Centenary United Methodist Church with a visitation beginning at 10am. Burial will be at a later date.
