MELVIN Janice Coffey, 64, wife of David Powell Melvin, died Tue, March 26, 2013 at UK Markey Cancer Center. Born in Monticello, KY, she was the daughter of Adeline and Ninnie Smith Coffey. She is survived by husband, Powell; mother, Ninnie Coffey; daughter, Leslie (Greg) McDonald; granddaughter, Amanda Morgan McDonald; and her Cairn Terriers, Stanley and Lilly. Jan graduated from Monticello High School, received a BA from the University of the Cumberlands and a MA from Morehead State University. After college, she became a social worker and later a mental health counselor. She then found her true calling, teaching. She spent 27 years as an elementary teacher, teaching 1st, 2nd, and 4th grades at Paintsville Elementary School. Jan was a member of Mayo United Methodist Church in Paintsville, KY, but has attended First United Methodist Church of Lexington since retiring and moving to Lexington. Jan's infectious smile and glowing personality touched many people especially family and friends. Her positive attitude, sense of humor and strong faith remained through the duration of her illness. Funeral services will be held 12:30pm Fri. at First United Methodist Church, 200 W. High Street, Lexington, KY by Dr. Mike Powers. Burial will follow in Lexington Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-9pm Thu at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Lexington Cancer Foundation, Inc., 1504 College Way, Lexington, KY 40502.
