Thank you for all who have taken the time to post here. I loved my Uncle. He amazed me with his humble intelligence, twinkle of his eye, generous heart and amazing conversationalist. He fought his battle with cancer until he could no longer fight. I was with him accompanying to appointments and moving him from his pristene house, to independant living to assisted living. I loved sitting at this desk and marveling at his work. He worked until months before he passed and I could tell he was getting sicker when his emails on his computer were piling up - my Uncle would never let that happen - he stayed up late into the night imparting his wisdom and answering questions. He loved his work and he loved his students. I miss him still.

It's hard to believe that you've been gone a year, John. Your loss is painfully palpable, even now. Thank you for changing my life.

I offer my condolences to the family. I knew him only briefly, but his kindness to a young academic starting to work on Donne is something I will never forget.

I knew him well, but never well enough. John was generous and exacting and everything I wished I could be and knew I could never approach being. He was my personal Richard Corey. My world is a little dimmer without him in it.

Dr. Shawcross taught my daughter and son-in-law at UK, where he enriched their love of literature, as he did for so many. We looked forward to talking with him at the many musical performances he attended and loved. I know many will miss this charming, brilliant, humorous man.

I am grateful to number myself among John Shawcross' students. Like many he welcomed to the study of Milton's poetry and prose, my teaching, my scholarship, and my university service have been molded more by his imprint than by any other professor. One of the many noteworthy aspects of John's teaching was his gift of himself to such projects as our biennial Milton Marathon at EKU, pictured here. Such generosity is emblematic of John's remarkable life.

John Shawcross embodied the very greatest virtues of the academic life. He was generous, welcoming and supportive to generations of young scholars, a constant friend and advisor to seasoned scholars, and one of the greatest lights of Milton scholarship there will ever be. I and many others will miss, yet cherish, his warmth, his smile, his wisdom.

Deepest sympathies. John was a great colleague and a good friend. He was liked and admired by his colleagues and by all his former students. Beyond his extraordinary accomplishments as a scholar he had a gift for friendship.

John Shawcross was indeed one of the "giants." As I read the postings here, as well as the ones on Facebook, I am reminded again of how many lives he touched during his very long career. For my part, he helped make possible an academic career for one who was past the traditional age for starting a Ph.D. program. And in an age when literary studies seem so devalued, it is heartening to know that there are still many of us who would "gladly learn . . . and gladly teach:"
Maybe John would forgive me for quoting these lines from "Lycidas:"
"There entertain him all the saints above/In solemn troops and sweet Societies/That sing, and singing in their glory move/And wipe the tears forever from his eyes."
God bless you, John Shawcross, and God bless all of you who knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

John was a real gentleman and scholar and was always easy to serve in UK Special Collections. His loss will be particularly felt in the literary world.

My wife, Susan, our son, Justin, and I want to express our deepest sympathy on John's passing. My mother -- John's cousin, Katherine Attanasio Larkin -- shared many fond memories of John with everyone in our family and was very proud of his accomplishments as a scholar. We know John will be greatly missed by so many.

Both Stuart and I wanted to extend our extreme condolences, our deep sorrow, and it's only deepened in the realization that John was not only a very dear friend and mentor to both of us over a span of about fifty years, but additionally, he was a giant in the profession, and there are so few of them. And so the loss not only to us but to the whole world of English studies is enormous.

Such a gracious man--a scholar and a friend. We will miss seeing him at CEA and joining him for dinner at some exotic restaurant only John knew existed. Requiescat in pace.

A clerk ther was of Oxenford also,
That unto logyk hadde longe ygo.
As leene was his hors as is a rake,
And he nas nat right fat, I undertake,
But looked holwe, and therto sobrely.
Ful thredbare was his overeste courtepy;
For he hadde geten hym yet no benefice,
Ne was so worldly for to have office.
For hym was levere have at his beddes heed
Twenty bookes, clad in blak or reed,
Of Aristotle and his philosophie,
Than robes riche, or fithele, or gay sautrie.
But al be that he was a philosophre,
Yet hadde he but litel gold in cofre;
But al that he myghte of his freendes hente,
On bookes and on lernynge he it spente,
And bisily gan for the soules preye
Of hem that yaf hym wherwith to scoleye.
Of studie took he moost cure and moost heede,
Noght o word spak he moore than was neede,
And that was seyd in forme and reverence,
And short and quyk and ful of hy sentence;
Sownynge in moral vertu was his speche,
And gladly wolde he lerne and gladly teche.
My world will never be the same without my latter-day Clerke.

Dr. Shawcross always expected the best out of his students, and this pursuit of not settling for less than what the best an individual can accomplish impacting my life. I kept in touch with Dr. Shawcross through correspondence, and I will miss his words of wisdom. He was a man of great grace.
God Bless, and may you enjoy your time in Paradise, Dr. Shawcross.
