BARBIERI Joseph N., 71, long time resident of Lexington, KY passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, March 6, 2014 renewed by a right spirit. Born in Brooklyn, NY on Sep 14, 1942, Joe was the son of A. Jerry and Annette Barbieri. He attended the College of William and Mary and received his BA from Kentucky Wesleyan College cum laude before receiving his J.D. with honors from the University of Kentucky Law School. He then went on to become a respected member of the Lexington legal community. He entered private practice with Bing Bush, Sr. and Fred Bachmeyer. Joe went on to serve honorably as the Director of Fayette County Legal Aid for 28 years. He served on the committee of the Fayette County Peace Officers Memorial, was a long term member of the Lexington Rotary Club and past member of the Bluegrass Sportsman League. Joe was preceded in death by his father Jerry and his beloved daughter Leah. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years Brenda Waits Barbieri, Lexington, KY; his sons Brian, Almaty, Kazakhstan and Nicholas, Louisville, KY, his granddaughter Audra, Lexington, KY; his mother Annette, Fredericksburg, VA; his sister Marie Dukes (Thom), Fredericksburg, VA; his sister-in-law Melinda McLaughlin (Brian); brother-in-law Raymond Waits (Ginny); nephews: Scott Dukes, David Dukes, Aaron Waits, Jeff Waits, Luke McLaughlin, Kyle McLaughlin; niece Molly McLaughlin; "adopted" daughter, Heather Tierney, San Diego. The family is grateful to the doctors and staff of the UK Transplant team who cared for Joe for the past seven years and to Hospice Care of the Bluegrass who provided dignified care in his home. Visitation will be Sunday, March 9, 2014 from 1-4pm at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd., Lexington, KY. Services will follow at 4pm with The Honorable James Ishmael officiating. Pallbearers with be George Skiadas and his nephews listed above. Honorary pallbearers are the Honorable Armand Angelucci and Dr. Roberto Gedaly, David Hamilton and Frank Farmer. Interment will occur at Blue Grass Memorial Gardens, 4915 Harrodsburg Rd., Jessamine County, KY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Hospice Care of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY 40504.
